A solo show of Colin Goldberg's mixed media art opens this weekend at Art Sites gallery in Riverhead, NY. "Improbable Forms" has an opening reception on Saturday, May 11, 2013 from 5 to 7 p.m. The exhibition continues through June 11, 2013. The solo show features new works on birch panel that combine incongruities to create art that is graceful and compelling.

ABOUT THE WORK
“Improbable Forms" is a public exhibition of new mixed-media works on birch panels by East End artist Colin Goldberg. The art in this exhibition explore multiple dualities: the gesture and control, the past and the future, abstraction and figuration. This body of work combines traditional and digital art making practices through the use of a pigment transfer process, resin, and hand-painting.
The exhibition is presented by Peconic Green Growth and was funded by a generous grant from the Huntingon Arts Council and the New York State Council on the Arts. Refreshments for the reception are being graciously provided by The Salamander General Store in Greenport, NY.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Goldberg was born in the Bronx, New York in 1971 to parents of Japanese and Jewish ancestry. His family moved to the East End when he was the age of 2 when his father was offered a teaching position at Long Island University. Although his parents both hold Doctorate degrees in Chemistry, they encouraged him to pursue art, enrolling him in classes and workshops at the Parrish Art Museum at an early age. He graduated from Southampton High School in 1990 and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Art with a concentration in Painting from Binghamton University in 1994.
After completing his undergraduate studies, Goldberg opened his first studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and soon relocated to Avenue A in Manhattan’s East Village, where he began his exploration of digital media and its relation to abstraction. In 2007, the artist was awarded a Master of Fine Arts degree in Computer Art under full scholarship from Bowling Green State University in Ohio.
Goldberg’s graduate work explored the relationship between digital and traditional art making practices. After graduate school, Goldberg lived and worked in Boston for several years before returning to the East End. He now lives and works in Orient Village with his fianceé Donna and their two cats.

The artist’s work has been exhibited at the Manhattan Armory, the Parrish Art Museum, the Islip Art Museum and the Roberson Museum in Binghamton NY, as well as galleries and art fairs in the Hamptons, Manhattan, Boston, Miami, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
Goldberg is currently represented by Yes Gallery in Brooklyn and the South Street Gallery in Greenport. He was one of four artists in Suffolk County awarded the 2013 Long Island Creative Individuals Grant, which funded the production of the work for this exhibition.

In 2005, one of the artist's canvasses was accepted into the permanent collection of the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center in Springs, the former home and studio of painters Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner.
Goldberg has recently been invited to be a guest panelist at the Pollock-Krasner House on Sunday, May 19 from 4 to 6 p.m. for a discussion organized by Marika and Tom Herskovic entitled “Expressionism in the 21st Century: Part 2.”
