As the weather cools down, the theater scene heats up with an opera screening (and discussion!) at Guild Hall, a black comedy of manners in Southampton and a musical in Mattituck. There’s also a live jazz show in Southampton, an artist talk in Greenport, and the last chance to check out the “Unfinished Business” exhibition at the Parrish Art Museum.
Afro-Cuban Live Jazz Show in Southampton
The Southampton Arts Center, in partnership with Jam Session of the Hamptons, is kicking off its new music program, “LIVE from the Southampton Arts Center,” with an Afro-Cuban jazz concert on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at 7 p.m.
“Latin from Manhattan —Afro-Cuban Jazz and Beyond” will focus on the blend of American jazz and Cuban music that emerged in the early 1940s and will feature the music of such Afro-Cuban jazz pioneers as Dizzy Gillespie, Chano Pozo and Machito.
The program is a part of a concert series in which the Arts Center hopes to combine the sounds of different genres with the flavors and customs that inspire the music, according to Director of Programs Amy Kirwin. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for Latin American snacks and refreshments, including hors d’oeuvres from Union Cantina.
The concert will be recorded live for the Jam Session Radio Hour on local NPR affiliate WPPB 88.3 FM. Series curator Claes Brondal will play drums with Ada Rovatti on saxophone, Alex Sipiagin on trumpet, Nestor Milanes on piano, Steve Shaughnessy on bass and Geraldo Flores on congas.

Breakfast Reception with “Brahms vs. Wagner”
East Hampton’s Guild Hall will host a breakfast buffet and special presentation of “Brahms vs. Wagner” before an encore screening of Richard Wagner’s “Tristan und Isolde” on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at 11 a.m.
“Brahms vs. Wagner: Composers in Conflict” will be presented by Mark Mangini, focusing on the famed rift between Johannes Brahms and Wagner that divided the Romantic movement on the the future of German music after Beethoven. Mangini, a chorus conductor for 30 years and a member of the CUNY music faculty, is the Music Director of the Choral Society of the Hamptons.
The presentation will be followed by an HD screening of the Mariusz Trelinski production of “Tristan und Isolde,” starting at noon. The five hours-plus opera screening (with multiple intermissions) stars Nina Stemme as Isolde, Stuart Skelton as Tristan and was filmed at the Met.
Tickets for the breakfast reception and lecture are $50, or $48 for Guild Hall members, and do not include the screening; screening tickets are $22 for general admission, $20 for members, and $15 for students. Guild Hall is located at 158 Main Street, East Hampton, NY 11937.

“God of Carnage” at Southampton Cultural Center
Center Stage at Southampton Cultural Center will present Yasmina Reza’s Tony-Award winning play, “God of Carnage,” opening on Thursday, October 13, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. and running through Sunday, October 30, 2016.
The black comedy, which won three Tony awards including Best Play, is about two sets of parents who meet to discuss an altercation between their sons. Their meeting goes from civil, to childish, to brutal and finally chaotic, according to a release from the Cultural Center.
Directed by Michael Disher, the cast includes Edward Kassar, John Leonard, Catherine Maloney and Frances Sherman. The original French script by Reza was translated by Christopher Hampton.
Performances will be on Thursdays at 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. for Sunday matinees.

“Unfinished Business” Finishes Up at the Parrish

Be sure to stop by the Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill for the final weekend of “Unfinished Business: Paintings from 1970s and 1980s by Ross Bleckner, Eric Fischl, and David Salle,” on view through Sunday, October 16, 2016.
The exhibition explores the distinct styles, philosophies and convictions of the three painters through 23 large-scale canvases and 17 works on paper. Bleckner, Fischl and Salle, who met in California during the early 1970s, all moved to New York City in the 1980s and launched what would become influential painting careers. Rejecting the then popular notion that painting was dead, the three artists used the medium in different ways to make their mark in contemporary art.
The exhibition tracks the development of each artist’s formal vocabulary and career as well as the connections and influences the three contemporaries shared dating back to the early 1970s, according to the museum. A catalogue accompanies the exhibition.

Artist Talk and Book Signing in Peconic
Artist Scott McIntire will talk about “The World Around Us … Art and Nature” and sign copies of his book in the auditorium at Peconic Landing in Greenport on Friday, October 14, 2016 at 7:30 p.m.
The artist talk will introduce the first show of a cooperative effort by East End Arts and Peconic Landing to offer a satellite gallery at Peconic Landing. McIntire will have three paintings on view for six months at the facility, and his talk will start by focusing on how the three works relate to his “Backyard Project” and how his work has moved over the past 10 years from realism into new directions. His more recent works depict naturalistically painted iconography juxtaposed with optical patterns to portray more complex messages about current environmental issues. In the second part of his talk, the artist wrote in an email, he will show photos from his book, “Backyard Project 2013” and discuss how his paintings over the last three to four years have been influenced by his discoveries while making the photos for that book. McIntire will also sign copies of the book, which documents the ever-changing nature of the Long Island landscape.

“First Date” Opens in Mattituck
“First Date,” a lighthearted musical about a blind date, will open at the North Fork Community Theater on Thursday, October 13 and run through October 30, 2016.
The 90-minute musical, directed by Chris Fretto, stars Nicole Bianco as serial romancer Casey and Sam Notaro as Aaron, who has never gone out with a stranger before; the musical follows the couple as they grapple with their first blind date. Written by Austin Winsberg with music and lyrics by Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner, the musical ran on Broadway with Zachary Levi and Kyra Rodriguez as the two romancers.
An Opening Night Reception on Thursday, October 13, sponsored by the Village Cheese Shop, will feature Bridget Elkin’s drone photography of the North Fork in the theater’s Side Gallery. The exhibition will remain on view until April 2017. Performances will be on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2:30 p.m.
“First Date” kicks off the NFCT’s 59th season, and will be followed by “Almost Maine,” “The Female Species,” “Cabaret,” and “Thoroughly Modern Millie.”
Individual show tickets are $25, but theatergoers can purchase a season pass for all five shows for $100.
