While viewing (and buying) art is the primary reason for the art fairs popping up across the globe, it's easy to NOT  see all of the art on view. Since Hamptons Art Hub is set in the Hamptons, we thought a whirlwind view of some of art presented by Hamptons galleries was in order.

There are two parts to this preview series--one story focuses on art to be found at Art Market Hamptons and the other at Art Hamptons.  This is only a partial list: think of it as a visual appetizer before the main course arrives.

In nearly all cases, Hamptons galleries at both fairs are presenting works culled from current exhibitions, gallery favorites or a cross-section of their stable of artists.

Get ready for an armchair look at some of the art to be found at Art Market Hamptons:

KATHRYN MARKEL FINE ARTS

Kathryn Markel Fine Arts has long-standing galleries in both Bridgehampton and Chelsea. For the gallery's booth at Art Market Hamptons, they will focus on works by Christian Haub, to mirror the show on view in Bridgehampton through July 20.

Haub's work is acrylic constructions made of stripes of colored light to exploit both natural light and the innate properties of the pigment in acrylic to create floating layers of color.

The booth will also feature abstract gestural wall sculptures by Don Martiny and paintings by Suzanne Laura Kammin. Taken all together, the booth promises to be a colorful presentation of works consistent with the gallery's focus. To see the entire presentation at Art Market Hamptons, click here.

QF GALLERY

QF Gallery was located in East Hampton Village for two seasons (2012-2013) and closed over the winter to focus on curation and special project presentations. They return to Art Market Hamptons for a second year to present a series of outdoor installations positioned to welcome fair goers from Bridehampton's Main Street entrance.

"PLOT" is an outdoor installation with works by Matthias Neumann, Thea Lanzisero and Keren Benbenisty. Each piece is an interactive work that "...encourages viewers to sit and look out, recline and look in, stop and look up," according to the gallery.

Matthias Neumann’s Bench is a cubic object that exaggerates, in minimalist style, a garden bench with trellis.  The self-contained unit is designed as part of a larger installation called “basics,” which reinterprets the essence of domestic space through sculptural interventions set in and outside a vintage airstream trailer.

Thea Lanzisero’s Starfish is a semi-performative work created through workshops similar to barn building and sewing circles, where groups build structures together, through which notions of solidarity, unity, and social connectivity emerge.

Keren Benbenisty’s This is the Color of My Dream, features ready-made flags and carry the opposite traits of nationalism. Hand-drawn with a blue writing pen, they have no defined graphics or solid colors, and they are impossible to be identified from afar.  The blue fields replace the hard-edge geometry traditionally employed to represent a concrete identity.

BIRNAM WOOD / GALLERIES

Birnam Wood has a long-standing gallery in East Hampton with a second gallery in Chelsea. For its booth, they decided to do something special and focus on three of its gallery artists: David Datuna, Margaret Garrett and Susan Grossman.

The majority of the booth will be devoted to Datuna's portraiture made by using Google Glass. (For details, a video and an online catalog, visit www.birnamwoodart.com).

Concurrent with the fair, Birnam Wood's East Hampton gallery is also exhibiting some of Datuna's work. This follows a solo show by Datuna presented in Chelsea earlier this year.

Both exhibitions come fresh from Datuna's installation Viewpoint of Billions at the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC, where 23,000 lined up to see (and experience) his art made from a specific cutting edge technology: Google Glass. The installation was the first contemporary artwork to integrate the wearable computer glasses, creating an interactive experience for viewers, according to Birnam Wood.

VERED CONTEMPORARY & VERED GALLERY

Both gallery branches of Vered are presenting works currently exhibited at its long-standing East Hampton Village galleries. Vered Contemporary just opened its annual "Art on the Edge" exhibition, providing a survey of cutting edge contemporary art pulled from art movements around the world. For its booth at Art Market Hamptons, they are presenting an excerpt from the show--effectively exhibiting the sprawling survey in two locations.
