RYAN LEE: “FOOD SEX ART the Starving Artists’ Cookbook”

Ryan Lee will present “FOOD SEX ART the Starving Artists’ Cookbook,” a group exhibition.
The exhibition looks at work of the avant-garde, art that is not bound by traditional definitions or structures. Looking at “food art”—defined by the gallery as “art that doesn’t seem to be art ... art through non-art means”—the exhibition features works more focused on conception than the objet d’art itself. On view will be work by artists such as Louise Bourgeois, John Cage, Dennis Oppenheim, Hannah Wilke and more.

Pace Gallery: “Fred Wilson: Afro Kismet”
July 10 through August 17, 2018

Pace Gallery will present “Fred Wilson: Afro Kismet,” an exhibition featuring the artist’s recent body of work.
Originally produced for the 15th Istanbul Biennial in the fall of 2017, “Afro Kismet” contextualises pieces from the Orientalist collection at the Pera Museum in Istanbul with new and existing works by Fred Wilson, while highlighting the ignored presence of communities with African descent in Turkey. Reconfigured uniquely for the gallery, the installation will include two chandeliers, two monumental Iznik tile walls, four black glass dripworks and a globe sculpture alongside installations and vitrine pieces that gather cowrie shells, engravings, photographs, a Yoruba mask, furniture and other objects collected on his travels to Istanbul.
A selection of the artist’s Murano glass works and drip sculptures will also be on display at the adjacent gallery. A vehicle for his meditations on blackness, death and beauty, the Murano glass works combine black Murano glass with elements of Ottoman chandeliers, fusing the histories and symbolizing the complex relationship between the Venetian and Ottoman empires.

Bruce Silverstein Gallery: “Model • Arbus • Solomon: We are the subject”
July 12 through September 8, 2018

Bruce Silverstein Gallery will present “We are the Subject,” a group exhibition featuring the work of Lisette Model, Diane Arbus and Rosalind Fox Solomon, each of whom has been the subject of solo exhibitions at MoMA in New York.
Lisette Model (1901-1983), Diane Arbus (1923-1971) and Rosalind Fox Solomon (b. 1930) all found independence and self-expression through their photographic practices and arts education. While their work is varied and different, all three women sought to explore their personal identities through others, sharing a concern with extending the boundaries of the self in their search for their own humanity. Model, who was a teacher to both Arbus and Solomon, believed the photographer’s subject matter to be both inherently subjective and impartial. With more than 40 works on display, viewers can witness what the gallery calls the artists’ “defiant attempts to understand the world and their place within it.”

Anton Kern Gallery: “Nobuyoshi Araki: I, Photography”

Anton Kern Gallery will present “Nobuyoshi Araki: I, Photography,” an exhibition featuring four distinct bodies of work by the renowned Japanese photographer.
Nobuyoshi Araki, whose work records the everyday and the space where his “self” can be reflected, uses the camera as a tool to reflect on the complexities of everyday life. The exhibition will show work from “Lovers Allure,” “Erotos,” “Northern Sky” and “Flower Cemetery,” Araki’s most recent series and the focal point of the show. “Flower Cemetery” features flower arrangements haunted by disused children’s dolls, toys and plastic figures. Showing intense but temporary beauty, the works reflect on mortality while acting as a deflected self-portrait.
“Lovers Allure”—featuring nude female subjects posed in bedrooms, bathrooms, on tatami mats and other intimate, domestic spaces, with surfaces painted in ribbons of color to reference the visceral nature of sexual desire—exemplifies Akari’s best-known subject of eroticism and the female form. “Erotos,” which is derived from the Greek personification of death, Thanatos, and god of love, Eros, juxtaposes still lifes of fruits and objects with close-up depictions of body parts, usually engaged in a sexual act.
“Northern Sky,” the series of photographs taken following the death of his wife, features flowers, cities, skies, people and still lifes, obscuring the line between morbid and beautiful and reminding viewers of the inseparability of death from life.

Ceysson & Bénétière New York: “The Surface of the East Coast: Différance”
July 12 through September 29, 2018
Ceysson & Bénétière New York will present “The Surface of the East Coast: Différance,” a group exhibition, curated by Marie Maetens.
The exhibition highlights the similarities between artists working in New York today and artists from the Supports/Surface group, a radical artist group of the late 1960s. Standing against the idea of the bourgeois painting hung on the wall, the artists created works that fit with the space itself, from floor to ceiling. Interested in the notions of deconstruction and reconstruction, this short-lived group of artists wanted to return to painting’s basics, focusing on the canvas and the frame, left blank of representation. The contemporary artists on display, although perhaps until recently unaware of Supports/Surface, share similar values in their work. With the canvas either dismantled or reconstructed, the artists focus on materials in their work, often “poor” or reused, or tied with the concept of craftsmanship. With their work, the hierarchy of the medium is threatened. Work by Joe Bradley, Pierre Buraglio, Louis Cane, Erik Lindman, Sam Moyer and Jean-Pierre Pincemin will be on display.

FiveMyles: “Wind Blown Canvas Thread in NYC Park: Edward Shalala”

FiveMyles will present “Wind Blown Canvas Thread in NYC Park: Edward Shalala.”
Edward Shalala, an abstract artist, will present reductive canvas work. The artist traveled to parks in all five boroughs of New York City, flying a kite to which raw canvas thread had been attached. Choosing a thread’s weight depending on the wind’s strength, Shalala lets the kite descend, allowing the windblown thread to form a shape on the ground. He then documents the shape with a 35mm camera and makes a gelatin silver print as the only proof that the forms existed.
