Hamptons-based photographer Eric Striffler lost everything--including cameras, equipment and computers--in a house fire on March 3, 2016 in Water Mill. The community reacted swiftly to the loss, donating $20,000 through a fundraising campaign at Giveforward.com to meet a $25,000 goal within days to replace the items lost by Striffler in the fire. There were no injures in the house fire that took five hours and around 50 firefighters to extinguish, reported The Southampton Press.
The house was owned by Southampton Town Tax Receiver Theresa Kiernan, who lived there with her mother, Ann LaWall, according to The Southampton Press. Both women were in Florida at the time of the blaze. Striffler, his dog, and another individual escaped without injury, according to The Southampton Press. Tripoli Gallery and Glenn Horowitz bookseller have closed their respective East Hampton galleries. In 2015, Glenn Horwitz Bookseller decided to divide their Newtown Lane gallery with Tripoli Gallery operating the main gallery space on the first floor while Glenn Horowitz operated a project space on the second floor. The space is now available for rent. Tripoli Gallery continues to hold exhibitions in The Hamptons at its Southampton gallery at 30A Jobs Lane with pop up shows planned for the 2016 Hamptons summer season. Glenn Horowitz continues its New York City business in its project space, RARE, located at 17 West 54th Street, and its main office at 20 West 55th Street.
The 7th Annual Hampton’s Juried Art Show have announced the artist winners of its open call for art. Winning artists are Amanda Bellino, Anthony D’Avino, Miles Jaffe and Sarupa Sidaath with Anzhelika Doliba receiving an Honorable Mention. An exhibition featuring their work will be held at RJD Gallery and launches with an Opening Reception on May 14, 2016 from 6 to 8 p.m. Proceeds from the annual juried art contest benefits The Retreat.
A major exhibition of Dennis Oppenheim's art work will be featured at Storm King Art Center. Opening May 14, 2016, “Dennis Oppenheim: Terrestrial Studio” traces the artist’s lifelong engagement with outdoor spaces through indoor and outdoor exhibitions and site-specific installations. Peter Marcelle Project of Southampton is now representing the work of Clio Newton. An exhibition including drawings by the American realism artist is planned for the summer. Clio Newton combines traditional portraiture with a contemporary sensibility. Classically trained at the Florence Academy of Art, Newton’s over-sized charcoal drawings range up to 7 feet high and have a contemporary edge.

Art Hamptons has switched owners and changed the weekend the contemporary art fair will be held. Art Hampton's 2016 edition will be held June 23 - 26, 2016 and returns to the same private estate in Bridgehampton. The fair is now presented by Urban Expositions which purchased the entire art fair production company from Rick Friedman earlier this year. Click here for details. Perlman Music Group and Hamptons Take 2 Film Festival were among 64 winners receiving grants administered by the Huntington Arts Council and announced in a celebration held on March 8, 2016 at the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association in Huntington. Grants totaling over $200,000 were awarded in the categories of Creative Individuals, Creative Curriculum and Creative Communities to organizations in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. The Perlman Music Group of Shelter Island received a Creative Curriculum grant and the Hamptons Take 2 Film Festival of Sag Harbor was awarded a Creative Communities Grant. The Huntington Arts Council manages grant funding opportunities for Long Island's NYSCA Decentralization grants funded by New York State Council on the Arts.
"Jackson Pollock" Alchemy in 3D" is the winner of the 2015 Digital Humanities Award for Best Use of DH for Public Engagement for its digital analysis of Jackson Pollock's 1947 painting Alchemy in the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice. Undertaken by Visual Computer Laboratory of ISTI-CNR in Pisa as part of conversation efforts at the Opifico delle Pietre Dure in Florence. The combined efforts of conservator Luciano Pensabene, digital project supervisor Roberto Scopigno and their respective teams helped reveal insights into the paint's materials, structure and execution, according to the Pollock-Krasner House & Studio Center in East Hampton. The interactive analytical graphics and touchable 3D map of the painting were highlights of "Alchemy by Jackson Pollock: Discovering the Artist at Work," an exhibition at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice exhibited from February 14 to September 14, 2015.
Robert Wilson performed Samuel Beckett's Krapp's Last Tape, a production Wilson directed and designed, at the Alexander Kasser Theater at Montclair State University in New Jersey. The production was staged March 17 - 20, 2016. Robert Wilson is the founder of the Watermill Center located in The Hamptons.

Elizabeth Peyton is exhibiting a new series of monotypes at Lincoln Center based on the Puccini's Manon Lescaunt and opera stars Jonas Kaufmann and Kristine Opolais when they performed with Bavarian State Opera, according to the Met. The artwork was selected by curator Dodie Kazanjian to mark the Metropolitan Opera's new production of Manon Lescaut, performed February 12 - May 7, 2016. Five of the artworks are titled Love. Peyton is based in New York and is a former part-time resident of the North Fork.
Photography by Michelle Stuart is the subject of a solo exhibition at the Bronx Museum. "Michelle Stuart Theatre of Memory: Photographic Works" is on view from February 3 to June 26, 2016. Organized by guest curator Gregory Volk, the exhibition features 12 recent large-scale images and represents Stuart's primary focus for the last few years, according to the museum. Michelle Stuart is one of the few female pioneers of Land Art and is also known for her nature-based art. The exhibition is the first museum exhibition of Stuart's photographic art. Anne Sherwood Pundyk of Mattituck and New York City is having a solo show of her abstract paintings at Christopher Stout Gallery in Brooklyn. "The Revolution Will Be Painted" has an opening reception featuring dance and song takes place on Friday, April 1, 2016 from 6 to 9 p.m. The show continues through May 1, 2016. Christopher Stout Gallery is located in East Williamsburg at 299 Meserole Street, Ground Floor Rear, Brooklyn, NY.
The art of East Hampton artist Barbara Groot is drawing serious attention. This month, Barbara Groot's art is the subject of an invitational solo show at the Quogue Library. On March 11, 2016, Groot was awarded Best in Show in East End Arts Gallery's judged themed show "Color". The winning painting Moving On was selected by Amy Worth of South Street Gallery in Greenport. Barbara Groot's solo show in Quogue presents a range of her contemporary abstract paintings inspired by nature. Click here to see her art.
