Theater, the annual Box Art Auction, art talks and more made our list of the best things to do this weekend in The Hamptons. As an extra bonus, look to the North Fork for the first session of a three-part tour exploring art on the North Fork. All events take place through August 25, 2019.

1.  Preview The Annual Box Art Auction

East End Hospice is hosting a preview reception for its 19th annual Box Art Auction on Wednesday, August 21, 2019,  from 5 to 7 p.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in East Hampton.

This preview is a chance to look at collectible works of art created by local artists using wine boxes or cigar boxes. These works are included in a silent or live auction, and proceeds directly benefit East End Hospice. The Auction Preview begins on Wednesday, August 21, 2019, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., followed by the reception, and continues through Thursday, August 22, 2019, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The auction will take place on Saturday, August 24, 2019, from 4:30 to 8 p.m.

2.  Lunch Time Talk on Helen Frankenthaler at the Parrish

The Parrish Art Museum is hosting its first talk coinciding with its current exhibition, "Abstract Climates: Helen Frankenthaler in Provincetown," on Thursday, August 22, 2019, from noon to 1 p.m. 

Parrish Art Museum curator Alicia Longwell will present "By the Sea, By the Sea, 1950s", the first of her three "Brain Food" lunch time talks at the Museum. This talk discusses Frankenthaler's first spent time in Provincetown during the summer of 1950, when she studied briefly with famed Abstract Expressionist Hans Hofmann.

3.  Shakespeare in the Park

The Southampton Cultural Center will host its annual Shakespeare in the Park, presented by Hip to Hip Theater Company, on Friday, August 23, 2019, and Saturday, August 24, 2019, at 7:30 p.m., at Agawam Park.

Taking place on Friday is a performance of "A Midsummer Night's Dream," followed by "The Tragedy of Richard III." Both performances will be preceded by "Kids & The Classics," a free, interactive children's workshop, at 7 p.m.

4.  Artist Clifford Ross and Art Historian Alexander Nemerov Discuss Frankenthaler

The Parrish presents art historian Alexander Nemerov, who is working on a new book about Frankenthaler, in conversation with artist Clifford Ross, nephew of Frankenthaler and Chairman of the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation, on Friday, August 23, 2019, at 6 p.m.

The discussion coincides with the recent opening of Frankenthaler's solo show at the Parrish "Abstract Climates: Helen Frankenthaler in Provincetown." Alexander Nemerov is a scholar of American Art as well as a noted speaker and writer. His recent books include Silent Dialogues: Diane Arbus and Howard Nemerov. Clifford Ross is a multi-media artist whose stunning LED wall, Light | Waves was installed on the front of the Museum in the summer of 2017, has work included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York); the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles); and the Museum of Fine Arts, (Houston) as well as the Parrish's permanent collection.

5.  Art as Ecosystem Panel Discussion

Guild Hall teams up with The Church to present "Art as Ecosystem" panel discussion, hosted by Eric Fischl, on Saturday, August 23, 2019, at 2 p.m.

The second in a three-part series, this Saturday's installment of "Art as Ecosystem" invites Christine and Andy Hall of the Hall Art Foundation; President of New York Academy of Art David Kratz; and business strategist, PaceX CEO and inaugural director of the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation Christy MacLear to explore the diverse contributors to the art world and take stock of art's health and vitality.

6.  Annual Box Art Auction for East End Hospice

East End Hospice is hosting its 19th Annual Box Art Auction benefit on Saturday, August 24, 2019, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church.

The evening includes live and silent auctions of art made out of repurposed wine or cigar boxes. Participating artists include Hans Van de Bovenkamp, Christa Maiwald, Daniel Pollera, Gabriele Raacke and more. Before you go, get an early look at the boxes during the free Auction Preview on Wednesday, August 21, 2019, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., followed by a reception from 5 to 7 p.m., and Thursday, August 22, 2019, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in East Hampton.

7.  Modernism and Feminism in the 1940s and 1950s Discussed in Pollock-Krasner Lecture

The Arts Center at Duck Creek will host Christina Weyl to discuss her book "The Women of Atelier 17: Modernist Printmaking in Midcentury New York," as the last segment of the Pollock-Krasner Lecture Series on Sunday, August 25, 2019, at 5 p.m.

This talk will highlight the women of Atelier 17, including Louise Bourgeois and Louise Nevelson, whose work advanced both modernism and feminism in the 1940s and 1950s in New York City. Weyl will reveal how Atelier 17 operated as an uncommonly egalitarian laboratory for revolutionizing print technique, while also fostering solidarity among women pursuing modernist forms of expression.

ON THE NORTH FORK 

North Fork Art District Tour

A self-guided tour of two North Fork art galleries and one artist studio will take place on Sunday, August 25, 2019, at noon, with by a Directors Dinner and Live Auction at 5 p.m. 

Galleries featured on the self-tour are William Ris Gallery in Jamesport, NY; Alex Ferrone Gallery in Cutchogue, NY; and Hector deCordova Studio in Greenport, NY. Guests can visit each destination in any order, but must visit all three to attend the Directors Dinner at A Lure Restaurant in Southold, NY. The dinner features a three-course meal followed by a live art auction featuring art from the three locations.
