Another week, another round of new exhibitions. In NYC, the art never stops in the gallery scene. Group shows seem to be popping up everywhere. In this edition of the NYC Galleries Scene, discover our picks for new NYC gallery shows opening in the West Village, the East Village, Chelsea and Brooklyn. Robin Rice Gallery: “Summertime Salon”

Robin Rice Gallery presents “Summertime Salon” from June 29 to September 11, 2016. An Opening Reception will be held on Wednesday, June 29 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Showcasing gallery artists, "Summertime Salon" presents photography from long-standing gallery artists and those new to the rooster. Artworks were selected to evoke the atmosphere and memories of summer.

CHELSEA:

Galerie Lelong: “Chicago Invites Chicago”

Galerie Lelong presents “Chicago Invites Chicago” from June 30 to July 29, 2016. An Opening Reception will be held on Thursday, June 30 from 6 to 8 p.m. 

For "Chicago Invites Chicago," three Chicago-based artists were asked to invite another Chicago artist they admire to participate in the exhibition. McArthur Binion, Samuel Levi Jones & Tony Lewis have invited John Phillips, Bethany Collins & Nate Young. The exhibition aims to highlight the richness of the city's contemporary artistic practices.

Luhring Augustine: “Shapeshifters”

Luhring Augustine presents “Shapeshifters” from June 27 to August 12, 2016. An Opening Reception will be held on Thursday, June 30 from 6 to 8 p.m.

This exhibition is titled after the mythological phenomenon known as “shapeshifting,” where an object or being can assume a form other than their own. The art on view embodies this concept by eschewing painting's standard rectangular format and pushes the boundaries of what is considered a painting.

Participating artists include Joe Bradley, Jeremy DePrez, Jeff Elrod, Ron Gorchov, Ralph Humphrey, Martin Kippenberger, Imi Knoebel, Robert Mangold, Jeremy Moon, Elizabeth Murray, Kenneth Noland, David Novros, Blinky Palermo, Steven Parrino, Joanna Pousette-Dart, Ruth Root, Frank Stella, Philip Taaffe, and Richard Tuttle.

Klein Sun Gallery: “Zhang Gong: The Watcher”

Klein Sun Gallery presents “Zhang Gong: The Watcher” in the South Gallery, on view from June 30 to August 19, 2016. An Opening Reception will be held on Thursday, June 30 from 6 to 8 p.m.

"The Watcher" is a solo exhibition of paintings by Beijing-based artist and animator Zhang Gong. The artist is best known for his contemporary spin on well-known figurative paintings culled from art history into which he inserts pop-culture references as well as unique characters of his own creation. For this exhibition, Zhang Gong has applied these themes to abstract works. Also on view from June 30 through August 19, 2016 is "Peili: Greater New York," an exhibition of multimedia works by Beijing-based artist Peili.

Microscope Gallery: “Katherine Bauer: Of the Quarry Land”

Microscope Gallery presents “Katherine Bauer: Of the Quarry Land” on view from July 1 to August 7, 2016. An Opening Reception will be held on Friday, July 1 from 6 to 9 p.m.

"Of the Quarry Land" presents works by Katherine Bauer created through ritualistic performances during which the artist exposes photographic paper rolls and 16mm film to elements of nature such as moonlight, soil and vegetation. For this series of images, Bauer turns her attention to an abandoned industrial quarry.

NURTUREart: “Summer Anagram”

NURTUREart presents “Summer Anagram,” opening on July 1, 2016. An Opening Reception will be held on Friday, July 1 from 6 p.m. to the end of the night.

"Summer Anagram" is a group exhibition that embraces memories of  summer through a disharmonic presentation. Viewers are encouraged to figuratively "assemble and reassemble" the works on view to formulate new perceptions of the meaning behind them and their relation to to the summer season. Participating artists include Cortney Andrews, Courtney Childress, Theresa Daddezio, Amanda Friedman, Rachel Phillips and Cheon Pyo Lee.

MINUS SPACE presents “On Paper” on view from July 9 to August 13, 2016. An Opening Reception will be held on Saturday, July 9 from 6 to 9 p.m.

"On Paper" is a group exhibition of works on paper by more than a dozen artists, each represented by one work.
