The July Fourth Weekend is a wild one and interesting exhibitions abound. It was tough to only pick three shows this weekend so expect to find one extra (this week only). All exhibitions have Opening Receptions. Each presents art that can be consider unusual for the Hamptons gallery scene.

This week’s picks are “Genieve Figgis: Yes Captain” at Harper's Books in East Hampton, NY, “Art on the Edge, 2014” at Vered Gallery in East Hampton, NY and “Waterscapes” at the Quogue Gallery in Quogue, NY. The Three To See Extra is "Bob Dylan: The Drawn Blank Series" at Mark Borghi Fine Art in Bridgehampton, NY.

“Genieve Figgis: Yes Captain” at Harper's Books

There's something about these paintings that possess knock-out qualities. At a quick glance, the works appear abstract - painted with authority with plenty of expression to go around. Upon closer examination, figures and a narrative emerge and oh what stories they tell. Expect to have emotions pushed and pulled in different directions.

An Opening Reception will be held on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. with the artist in attendance. The show remains on view through Aug. 6. Harperʼs Books is located at 87 Newtown Lane, East Hampton, NY 11937. www.harpersbooks.com.

Exhibiting artists hail from around the world, including a few based in the Hamptons. Exhibiting artists include Peter Buchman, Ray Caesar, Colin Christian, Tim Conlon, Sam Wolfe Connelly, Michael Cuffe, Gentleman’s Game, Jessica Hess, Jason Shelowitz, Mark Jenkins, Elektra KB, Steven Klein, Mary Larsen, Jessica Lichtenstein, Francesco Lo Castro, Adam Miller, Ashley Maxwell, Taylor Pilote and Swoon.

“Waterscapes” by Barbara Vaughn - Quogue Gallery

Quogue Gallery is new to the Hamptons gallery scene and comes out of the box with a strong show. "Waterscapes” presents a new body of fine art photography by Barbara Vaugh made on cold press rag paper. While the exhibition title is safe, the art takes chances. Abstract and lush, the images conjure abstract paintings made without a brush. Peaceful? Yes. Expected? No. Take a look and see how complicated surface waters can become.

An Opening Reception takes place on Saturday from 4 to 6:30 p.m. The exhibition remains on view through Aug. 14. The solo show inaugurates The Quogue Gallery. The gallery is located at 44 Quogue Street, Quogue, NY 11959. www.quoguegallery.com.

THREE TO SEE EXTRA:

“Bob Dylan: The Drawn Blank Series” -  Mark Borghi Fine Art

Don't like his musician celebrity status fool you - Bob Dylan knows his way around a pencil and paintbrush. The new exhibition presents paintings based on drawings and sketches Dylan made while on the road from 1989 through 1992.  A mix of street scenes, portraits, interiors, landscapes, nudes and still lives, the works possess a quiet vibrancy that seems to be intimate reflections mingled with public moments swept together with poetry.

An RSVP Opening Reception takes on Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. (It's already sold out). The exhibition remains on view through July 18. Mark Borghi Fine Art is located at 2426 Main Street, Bridgehampton, NY 11932.  www.borghi.org.
