The annual Birdhouse Auction to benefit the Coalition for Women’s Cancers at Southampton Hospital and Lucia's Angels took place on Oct. 19 at Peter Marcelle Gallery. A popular event in the Hamptons art community, this year's ninth edition drew the talents of 80 artists and artistic types to create a birdhouse for charity.
Contributors include artists Stephanie Brody-Lederman, Eric Ernst, Daniel Pollera, Michael Ferrer, Dan Rizzie, Steve Zaluski, Dennis Leri, Roisin Bateman, Pat Kochie, Tom Kochie, Evan Zatti, Gabrielle Raacke, Monica Banks, Linda Capello, John Capello, Eric Dever, David Geiser, Kimberly Goff, Tracy Harris, Teri Kennedy, Mary Laspia, Setha Low, Carolyn Munaco, Kris Warrenberg, Abby Abrams, Kathleen Bifulco, Barbara Intermaggio, Arlene Bujese, Dorothy Frankel, Peter Waldner and others.
The Birdhouse Auction, which is a major fundraiser for the Coalition of Women's Cancers, began as a brainstorm by East End artist and breast cancer survivor Karyn Mannix.
“We thought last year would be the last year of the birdhouse auction," stated Mannix. "But due to popular demand, we have returned for our eighth consecutive year. We always hold the auction in October, which is breast health awareness month, in hopes that it will be the perfect reminder for all to get make an appointment with the doctor for your annual health check.”
The Coalition for Women's Cancers at Southampton Hospital is a local, volunteer-driven group who provide a supportive network for women affected by breast, ovarian and uterine cancers and their families on the East End of Long Island. CWC is headed by Susan Barry Roden with Stacy Quarty as the group’s Vice President, Vicki Durand as Secretary and Gwen McGowan as Treasurer.
“We know that early detection is key to increasing the survival rate in cancers affecting women,” states Roden on the organization's website, “...Here, on Long Island, we have one of the highest rates of breast cancer in the nation. Being proactive is imperative.”
Lucia's Angels is a foundation committed to helping women and families on Eastern Long Island with late-stage women’s cancers including breast cancer, ovarian cancer, cervical cancer and uterine cancer. The foundation was created in loving memory of Lucia Terzi Bagan.
The Birdhouse Auction is a welcomed fundraiser for both charities.
“This is a large local community event that everyone enjoys, where our community gives back to itself," said Roden. "It is a wonderful event.”
