The 2nd ANNUAL MIDWEEK ART AT ASHAWAGH HALL will take place on Wednesday and Thursday, July 24th and 25th. This is a unique show for East Hampton (partly because it’s taking place mid-week), but even more so for its compelling and diverse lineup of local artists.

The show will feature the work of Cynthia Loewen, John Todaro, Jerry Schwabe, Lynn Martell, Peter Spacek and Sarah Jaffe Turnbull.

The hours are from Noon until 9 pm on Wednesday and 10 am and 5 pm on Thursday. A reception will take place on Wednesday evening (July 24th)  from 5 pm until 9 pm. There is free admission and children are welcome.

Cynthia Loewen is a realist painter from East Hampton, and the current chairperson of the art committee for the Springs Improvement Society. Her specialty is local landscapes and seascapes which she’ll be displaying as acrylics and watercolors. Cynthia has a talent for evoking a sense of place (a technique no doubt informed by her family’s long history in the area). At the show she’ll be showing new underwater paintings.

John Todaro is an award-winning photographer from East Hampton whose photographs are iconic to the area and have been displayed and published widely on the East End. He’ll be displaying new work including recent landscapes from East Hampton, landscapes from the southwest, and also a group of new abstractions and black and whites. For collectors, he’ll have a group of “first prints” available at the show.

Jerry Schwabe is a painter, sculptor and photographer. He has studied at various schools, including, the National Academy of Fine Arts, New School University, School of Visual Arts, and the Art Students League. His award-winning work has been displayed at many solo shows in East Hampton. He won the President’s Award for a sculpture displayed at the American Artist’s Professional League. Jerry paints for “the eyes and the soul” and his soft muted colors in many of his beach scenes reflect a sense of calmness and serenity.  Contrastingly, many of his new paintings are full of vibrant bursts of unexpected color pairings.

Lynn Martell is a gifted watercolorist and oil painter who studied at the Art Students League in Manhattan and who has displayed extensively in East Hampton—including many shows at Ashawagh Hall. Lynn’s work has also been shown in Greenport, NY. She will have much recent work at the show, including seascapes as well as new landscapes.

Peter Spacek is a professional illustrator most well-known for his weekly cartoons in the East Hampton Star. Peter also runs “Ditch Ink” an online business where his designs are available on books, apparel and notecards. At the show he’ll be displaying his extraordinary surfboard scrimshaw, along with many original sketches and prints from his published work.

Sarah Jaffe Turnbull is a very talented ceramicist and sculptor from Bridgehampton, NY whose figurative pieces and vessels reflect a Japanese aesthetic and palette, and also convey an affinity for the human condition and imagination. Her work was exhibited earlier this year at The Lear Gallery in Sag Harbor, and has been a frequent exhibitor at the Celadon Gallery in Water Mill, NY.
