"Portraying Artists: Photographs by Walter Weissman" opens on October 24 and remains on view through January 3. An Opening Reception will be held on Oct. 24 from 4 to 6 p.m.

“Photographing artists who I hung out and worked with became a natural extension of my own artwork and studies,” says Walter Weissman. “The photos in this exhibition highlight and preserve a distinctive time of creative genius in both the New York and East End art worlds.” –Walter Weissman

The exhibition is an intimate photographic study in black and white of some of the most influential performing, literary, fine artists and designers of our time. The 15 portraits capture Chuck Close; Donald Sultan; Dennis Oppenheim; Roy Lichtenstein; Ross Bleckner; Edward Albee; Dan Flavin; Eric Fischl; Billy Joel; Larry Rivers; Calvin Klein; Betty Friedan; Elaine de Kooning; Robert Rauschenberg; Roy Lichtenstein and Arman in rare spontaneous and unguarded moments at the zenith of their creative careers with many of the images taken at Guild Hall.

Guild Hall Museum collects, preserves and presents the works of accomplished East End artists. A year-round schedule of changing exhibitions includes solo and group shows presenting internationally renowned visual artists and emerging regional artists.

Solo shows have included Robert Motherwell, Chuck Close, Barbara Kruger, Eric Fischl and others. Curated group shows, traveling exhibitions, the annual Artists Members Exhibition and exhibitions from the collection are part of Guild Hall’s exhibitions rooster. In addition, an outdoor sculpture court presents changing solo shows each year.

The museum’s collection includes 19th, 20th and 21st century art made up of paintings, sculpture, prints, watercolors, photographs and drawings. Internationally distinguished artists in the collection include Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, Willem de Kooning, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol and others.
