1991 Plymouth Voyager, Like New

Paintings by Taylor A. White

MARQUEE PROJECTS is pleased to present 1991 Plymouth Voyager, Like New —Taylor White’s second solo exhibition with the gallery. A reception for the artist will be held on Saturday, July 28 from 5pm to 7pm, with an artist talk and moderated interview beginning at 5pm, sharp.

The exhibition will feature new paintings, drawings, and a mixed media installation that encapsulates the ongoing experimentations of process and technique.

Taylor White has been on somewhat of a roll lately. In the past year, he has completed two residencies – one in Madrid at [ES]positivo and one in Brooklyn at Cycamore Artist Residency. He has had three solo shows and has been included in several group exhibitions around the globe. Always reflecting movement, his work’s disparate elements of assemblage and speed of completion seem to be amplified by the torrent of recent activity. White often talks about the necessity of speed to manifest his artworks, removing hesitation and allowing the spontaneous to flourish. These new works succeed at both.

White’s artworks are striking when seen online, although are even more striking and complex when viewed in person, as applications are revealed. Including acrylic and oil, charcoal, pencil, spray paint, air brush, sewn canvas, and repurposed cut-up artworks, these materials all collide and collage into soaring scenes of hilariously juxtaposed abstract environments. While his work continues to be boisterous, now at times it reveals elements of a secret calm. Hinting at some reprieve from the insane age of digital media blitz, White also continues to mine the kaleidoscope of surrounding stimuli and phenomena.

Taylor White graduated with a B.A. from University of Mary Washington, Fredericksburg, VA. He received the Emil R. Schnellock Award for Excellence in Painting in 2016 and the Purchase Award. Taylor was awarded a residency from [ES]positivo 7B in Madrid, Spain and Cycamore Artist Residency in Brooklyn, NY and, later this year, a two-month residency in Berlin, Germany. White has now widely exhibited nationally, as well as internationally in Brisbane, Berlin, Madrid, London, and this fall will have his first show in Seoul.
