I am a representational painter and see myself as a child of the modernist tradition. Still life, interiors, and all manner of plants and flowers are my primary subject matter; my media are oil painting, collage, and printmaking. I am not aiming for verisimilitude but rather to create visual poems that express my feelings about my subject matter.
Henri Matisse, one of my painting heroes, told his students to find the vase in the turn of a calf and an amphora in the way a pelvis fits into the thighs, and this search for visual metaphor is at the heart of what I try to do. I hope to make my work embody certain dualities: formally strong but also accessible and expressive, linked to tradition but uniquely mine, representational but inventive, and perhaps other creative oppositions to come.
