New Opera Based on Ibsen's "A Doll House"

"A Doll's House: A New Opera" by Grace Oberhofer will debut at the historic Jamesport Meeting House on the North Fork on Saturday, May 11, 2019 at 7 p.m. as part of the Rites of Spring Music Festival.

Composed by Grace Oberhofer and directed by Allison Benko, "A Doll's House: A New Opera" is based on Henrik Ibsen's play "A Doll's House" (1879) which catapulted Nora Helmer to a world-wide symbol of female empowerment and spurred many women to begin finding their voices. The 90-minute piece follows the structure of Henrik Ibsen's original play, but uses music an extension of Nora's "gilded cage." Although Nora's domestic life honors manipulation over authenticity, she is forced to find her own voice when the masquerade ends. It is then that her musical confines begin to unravel.

Tickets are $25 or $30 at the door. Jamesport Meeting House is located at 1590 Main Rd, Laurel, NY 11948.
