Cindy Pease Roe is known for her site-specific installations that make use of found and repurposed marine plastic materials that draw attention to environmental concerns. Based on the North Fork of Long Island, Cindy Pease Roe's art has been installed in spots around the globe. In The Hamptons, she's created installations for the Sag Harbor Whaling Museum and the Southampton Arts Center.

Her latest piece, Pieces of You: Much Ado About Something, can be found in Miami Beach as part of a project by Aradia and Art Basel Miami Beach Week. The installation is a chandelier made from marine plastics (collected on Long Island) and woven with fiber optic lighting, explained Roe.

"The strands cascade down from a vintage airplane engine cover that I used as a frame for the piece," she wrote in an email. "The work is meant to resemble a trash gyre, a large swirling patch of human waste made mostly of plastics floating in our oceans. By stepping into the installation the viewer takes on the perspective of a marine animal living in a plastic-polluted environment. While not from the ocean, I chose to use fiber optics as a tool to engage with a wider audience, and help proliferate my message."

Gyre Chandelier #1 is on view at Arcadia.Earth, a fully immersive eco-conscious art installation located at 3700-3740 NE 2nd Ave Miami, FL 33137. The installation opened on Monday, December 3, 2018 and remains on view until Sunday, December 16, 2018.

In addition to her work as a marine-plastic sculptor and ocean conservationist, she is also a painter. Roe lives and works on the North Fork of Long Island.

For Miami Art Week, Roe is one of several artists participating in Arcadia Earth's Project, who created an immersive experience for visitors in partnership with the new Miami School of Fashion, Istituto Marangoni and the experiential retail designer Valentino Vettori. Artists creating immersive installations include Tamara Kostianovsky, Etty Yaniv, Samuelle Green and Cindy Pease Roe. For details on the project and an event schedule, click here.
