The phrase "BY THE SEA" feels like a poetic refrain that may channel a place where legend was born and its retelling, set by a seemingly endless bed of wind-tossed wave tips, would be as much part of the story as setting for the unfolding of a hypnotic tale. In a sense, the exhibition "BY THE SEA" at MARQUEE PROJECTS is of this ilk.

The group show features a quartet of photographers who make the sea a central part of their narrative or conceptual work with the turning of time adding layers beyond what is easily visible. Each photography has selected a different method to make their photo-based work, putting on view a range of photography history. "BY THE SEA" presents art by Steel Stillman, Mikael Levin, Vera Lutter and James Welling.

On Saturday, May 19, 2018 at 5:30 p.m., Stillman and Levin, who also curated the show, unite among the works to discuss the evolution of photographic techniques and the ways this contributes or influences the interpretation of images and the perception of the medium itself. The talk takes place at MARQUEE PROJECTS in Bellport Village on Eastern Long Island, NY. The event is free and open to the public.

The exhibition also invites viewers to explore the ever-evolving nature of the photographic method and how the understanding (and acceptance) of these methods and their usages can change with time, according to the gallery.

Photography by Lutter were made by camera obscura. Stillman presents photography with source material that originated from a pocket-size camera and developed at a drugstore that were scanned, printed, enlarged and further processed to create his art.

A video by Welling combines and links generations of artists from his family together through a single mixed media work. Levin made his art by the traditional technique of black and white photography to help form his conceptual narrative art.

"BY THE SEA" remains on view through May 20, 2018. The exhibition is curated by Mikael Levin.
