This week, New York City galleries are exploring different variations of abstraction, from densely composed canvases, hard-edge painting and mixed media, multi-layered photography and painting-sculpture hybrids that defy conventional labels. Chelsea, Downtown, Uptown and Brooklyn galleries will offer group and solo shows, surveys and new work from contemporary artists. Cristin Tierney: “Hard Edges: Lorser Feitelson, Elise Ferguson, and Alois Kronschlaeger”

March 1 through April 7, 2018

Opening Reception: Thursday, March 8, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Cristin Tierney will present “Hard Edges: Lorser Feitelson, Elise Ferguson and Alois Kronschlaeger.”

Exploring the legacy of hard-edge abstraction, the group exhibition features the work of Lorser Feitelson (1898-1978) with two contemporary artists, Elise Ferguson and Alois Kronschlaeger. With economic use of form, crisp lines, and bright, saturated palettes, the works on view represent the various ways these artists approached hard-edge abstraction and the use of “craft” materials in everyday use. Ferguson and Kronschlaeger, who will be present at the opening reception, produced new work for the show, while Feitelson’s work dates back to the 1960s.

Feitelson’s oil and enamel on burlap paintings feature geometric planes of uniform color with flattened space, smooth paint application and simplified forms. Ferguson’s paintings are comprised of built-up troweled layers of plaster with uneven surfaces, repeated patterns and illusionistic depth that suggest something representational yet actually derived from geometric variations created on her computer. Kronschlaeger’s yarn-on-mesh screen drawings are created by threading Merino wool through aluminum mesh screen. The structured compositions combine weaving, sculpture and painting.

Marianne Boesky Gallery: “Claudia Wieser: Chapter”

March 1 through April 14, 2018

Opening Reception: Thursday, March 1, from 6 to 8 p.m.

In her second solo exhibition with the gallery, Claudia Wieser will present “Chapter” at Marianne Boesky Gallery.

Inspired by the 1976 BBC adaptation of “I, Claudius” by Robert Graves, Berlin-based artist Claudia Wieser’s latest work turns the gallery into an experimental environment. With composite wallpaper, ornamented woodwork, gilded drawings, hand-painted tiles and multifaceted mirrors, the installation is a manifestation of spirit, psyche, space and subconscious. With wooden sculptures of various shapes and sizes, which are adorned individually by hand, the installation becomes a place where, according to the gallery, “time is skimmed, cropped and erased.” With the individual chapters of a life or a story conflated with memory and perception, the scene provokes questions about the relationships between these elements while inviting viewers to create their own associations and narratives.

Nathalie Karg Gallery: “Nathlie Provosty: My Pupil is an Anvil”

February 28 through April 15, 2018

Opening Reception: Wednesday, February 28, from 6 to 8 p.m.

In her second exhibition with Nathalie Karg Gallery, Nathlie Provosty will present “My Pupil is an Anvil.”

Nathlie Provosty’s new work presents a nuanced concept of vision. The exhibition’s title is a play on words, as pupil can refer to the black circular opening in the iris of the human eye or a student, while an anvil is a metalworking tool or the small bone near the ear that registers vibration. Like the title, the five large paintings and several smaller pieces, made with oil paint on linen, play with perception through form and color. Lines that look mechanical are actually hand drawn, and colors that appear monochromatic are actually deeply layered.

Eric Firestone Gallery: “Joe Overstreet: Innovation of Flight: Paintings 1967-1972”

March 1 through May 5, 2018

Opening Reception: Thursday, March 1, from 6 to 8 p.m.

In “Joe Overstreet: Innovation of Flight: Paintings 1967-1972,” Eric Firestone Gallery will present a survey of the artist’s early work.

The exhibition will focus on Joe Overstreet’s “Flight Patterns” series, featuring his suspended canvases made in the early 1970s alongside a select group of shaped canvas constructions from the late 1960s. The radical body of work is installed with ropes through grommets and attached to the ceiling, wall and floor, which allows the the pieces to become not only architectural but slightly different with each installation.

The innovative spatial structures, inspired by Overstreet’s life as an African American male, include works such as his four-panel shaped canvas construction “Justice, Faith, Hope, and Peace,” which was painted in 1968 after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. Overstreet’s work, which is composed of cubic geometries, dynamic angles and pyramidal forms, addresses social and political causes while investigating the spatial and textural possibilities of painting and complex cultural histories.

Mnuchin Gallery: “Sean Scully: Wall of Light”

February 28 through April 14, 2018

Opening Reception: Wednesday, February 28, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

In its second collaboration with the artist, Mnuchin Gallery will present “Sean Scully: Wall of Light.”

Surveying the artist’s most celebrated body of work, the “Wall of Light” series that Sean Scully began making in 1984 and continues to develop through today, the exhibition will include more than 20 paintings, watercolors and pastels. Scully, who was originally inspired by Mayan ruins on a trip to Mexico in the early 1980s, will show work that spans decades and locales.

Applying a three-dimensional sensibility to painting, Scully applies luminous stripes like bricks of a wall of light, painted to reflect the sun’s light on a building as it changes throughout the day. With loose, soft segments of color, his rectangles do not quite touch, allowing for glimpses of pigment underneath;  his gestural brushstrokes work as historical markers, tracking his own emotional content of the abstractions. Created from a sensitive palette in nuanced hues, the work shows the tension of depicting the solidity of the wall against the ephemeral nature of light.

Anton Kern Gallery: “Sarah Jones”

March 1 through April 7, 2018

Anton Kern Gallery will present “Sarah Jones,” a solo exhibition featuring new work by the artist.

Sarah Jones, a London-based artist, will show small-format and large-format photographs in her fifth exhibition with the gallery. Jones’ small format photographs depict still lifes, while her large format photographs were made outside the studio. Her work—exploring the complex relationship between reality and imagination and between the fixed and hallucinatory—features subject matter such as cut flowers, cultivated plants, upended glass objects and water cascading down a waterfall. With surfaces that are both waxy and slippery, her photographs reframe the cultivated natural world alongside an often glassy, illusory one.

John Doe: “Slow Motion”

March 1 through March 22, 2018

Opening Reception: Thursday, March 1, from 6 to 8 p.m.

John Doe Gallery will present “Slow Motion,” a show featuring work by Michael Chandler and Charlie Rubin.

Despite coming from two different generations, Michael Chandler and Charlie Rubin both create meditative, vivid abstractions. Chandler’s visceral paintings are densely worked canvases rich with dark and luminous color. Grounded in nature but informed by the city, his brushstrokes echo the movement of the human body. Rubin’s work plays on the void of the post-Instagram world and the artifice of space. By adding layers, physically and digitally on top of his photographs, Rubin’s work blurs the lines between the natural and unreal, the ordinary and extraordinary.
