Bestselling Author Helen Simonson Kicks off Spring Writers Speak Wednesdays Series at Stony Brook Southampton

Stony Book Southampton presents bestselling novelist Helen Simonson on Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at 7 p.m. in the Radio Lounge on the second floor of Chancellors Hall. The evening will begin with a brief reception at 6:30 p.m.; a reading at 7 p.m. and will be followed by a Q&A and book signing.

Helen Simonson, who earned her MFA in Creative Writing at Stony Brook Southampton in 2008, turned her thesis into a debut novel — “Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand” — that became a New York Times bestseller. Her second novel, “The Summer Before the War,” was released in 2016. This will be the first guest in the spring Writers Speak Wednesdays series of free author talks and readings open to the public at Stony Brook Southampton

Parrish Art Screen Documentary, Underwater Dreams

Parrish Art Museum presents a screening of the documentary “Underwater Dreams” on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 6 p.m.

The documentary film “Underwater Dreams” expolores an epic story that follows the sons of undocumented Mexican immigrants, who fashion a robot from Home Depot products and defeat engineering powerhouse M.I.T. in a NASA-sponsored robotics competition. Written and directed by Mary Mazzio and narrated by Michael Peña.2014, NR, 86 minutes.

Bay Street Theater Partners with Hamptons International Film Festival to Showcase Oscar Nominated Shorts

Bay Street Theater and Hamptons International Film Festival will showcase Oscar Nominated Shorts on Saturday, February 11, 2017, with screenings being held at 12 p.m., 2 p.m., 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Bay Street Theater.

Audiences will have the chance to see the new Academy Award nominees in the categories of Best Live Action Short Film and Best Animated Short Film. This represents the 12th consecutive year that Shorts HD and Magnolia Pictures present this theatrical experience.

Lunar New Year and Asian Arts Celebration at Southampton Cultural Center

The Southampton Cultural Center presents “A Chinese Lunar New Year/Asian Arts Celebration” on Saturday, February 11, 2017 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Levitas Center for the Arts on Pond Lane in Southampton Village.

The celebration features live stage performances by Asian instrumentalists, singers and dancers, a “Taste of Asia” buffet reception and a family-friendly mix of open workshops for children. The event will open with the Lion Dance at 3 p.m., performed by Long Island’s popular Ryu Shu Taiko Japanese Art Center. Children’s Workshops will follow from 3 to 5 p.m. The stage performance, takes place from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Southampton Cultural Center's auditorium. The performance showcases accomplished artists who have performed in prestigious venues throughout the metro NY area and beyond. Their countries of origin include China, India, Japan and Okinawa.

Admission is free for the Lion Dance and Family Workshops. Tickets for the performance are $20 or free for children and students 21 years old or younger with Student ID. Southampton Cultural Center is located at 25 Pond Ln, Southampton, NY 11968. www.scc-arts.org.

JDTLab: The Neo-Political Cowgirls and The Retreat present ONE BILLION RISING at Guild Hall

JDTLab: The Neo-Political Cowgirls and The Retreat present “ONE BILLION RISING: SOLIDARITY AGAINST THE EXPLOITATION OF WOMEN” on Sunday, February 12, 2017 at 2 p.m. The event will be held in the John Drew Theater in the Dina Merrill Pavilion at Guild Hall.

The One Billion Rising campaign is now in its fifth year. Local singers, songwriters, poets, writers, and other community members are invited to participate with the Neo-Political Cowgirls and The Retreat in uniting with people throughout the world to help end violence against women with written words, song, and dance.
