In our current times, it’s essential to have some point of contact, some one issue you follow and understand. Let us open our apertures a little by allowing in more of something — Art, music literature, conversation, ideas, an encounter……or three.”

~ The Artist Study

"Abiding by Beauty" is an invitation to see the results of such an encounter, directly with the environment and world view of an artist. Timothy McGuire (b. 1971) is an artist of rare conviction. A painter, highly trained, McGuire chooses an inner instinct to guide his technique to abide the beauty of his creations. We see an artist composing with nature. In this show, a visual symphony of subtle hues are cast out to the composition, then a slow build-up of intense blues, sweeping strokes with the sable contrasting the light and shadows, leading us to a salient finale.

An Invitation, a remarkable array of color and abstract shapes, depicts a sailboat departing the harbor, the ethereal glow draws one in to feel as if they are being invited to the great unknown. The warmth of the late afternoon sky of soft peach ivory mixed from brilliant cadmiums, bellowing out in front of the faithful pigments of blues, leaves us to ponder…if such a place is actually within ourselves.

McGuire’s visual interpretation reminds us of these points of connection to be made when approaching seemingly simple elements of our daily lives, such as in works including Montauk Fishing Boat, Coffee and the portrait of Angela, a familiar beauty with much more to be discovered, once contact is made.

Many of the Modern artists of the 19th century were captivated by the natural world around them, considering themselves pure painters of their observations. Manet was one of the first of his Impressionist confreres to paint Venice, and even he was not immune to its magic, still hoping to be less sentimental than those in academia.

When we view Timothy McGuire’s Venice Canal, not only do we see the visual influence of Manet and Whistler in this painting through the unique atmosphere in the water, velvety textures and tones, but the sense of nostalgia is inescapable. Just like the progressive artists of that time, the magnetism of beauty, and obedience to it, is honored in the present with each piece of art in McGuire’s magnificent oeuvre.

Composed of landscapes, seascapes, portraits and beloved objects in his travels, McGuire’s paintings inspire the viewer to consider beauty through all the senses. Join us for this special weekend preview.

“A man of few words, I prefer to communicate with painted images… I always paint from life…Through the marks I make, I try to communicate some combination of what I see, how I feel, and what I think. My paintings represent my best self; direct, honest, and open.”

Timothy McGuire, born and raised in Buffalo, NY, has spent time on both coasts and travels by obeying his inner compass and shares with us his story, as well as his knowledge in classic drawing and painting, through workshops at The Artist Study. A natural educator, McGuire has taught youth in Los Angeles, CA for ten years, until his propensity for painting got so loud that he was compelled to listen. McGuire enrolled in the painting program at the Florence Academy of Art where he received a full scholarship in his first year, a teaching partnership in his second year, and graduated in 2010.

McGuire has exhibited his work at Shain Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Ann Long Fine Art in Charleston, SC, and the New Britain Museum of American Art in New Britain, CT. In addition, he has presented several solo exhibitions in Florence. McGuire currently lives, teaches, and paints in Florence, Italy. He is also the head academic instructor of The Artist Study on the East End and divides his time between classes at our studio on the East End, as well at his studio in Florence.
