Ann Brandeis

"My images are a visual dialogue focusing on the many paths we take throughout our life. I look for signs and symbols that visually describe or capture our memories — personal moments in time, which remind us of our past, sustain us through our present, and guide our future. Often conflicting, these memories may have little to do with rational thought and are resistant to logic, reminding us of our innocence, our passions, desires, and losses, which, when embraced, become our history.”

"I believe these personal and universal memories mark the passage of time, and remind us that time is, “Both our enemy and our friend.”

"Moving beyond literal representation, I use the camera to interpret the world — a place, a feeling, or an experience. I hope the resulting images challenge the viewer to look again at what passes in front of them, transcending the surface to reach the essence. That’s what excites me. It keeps me in the moment, one moment at a time. From beach scenes and mountain vistas, to urban scenes that reflect back to me, I offer these calming, reassuring photographs as simple hope in our ever-changing world."

"As a photographer with a love of painting, I found a natural progression by blending my two interests to create mixed media works. The process starts with mounting photographs on birch panel. Next, I cover the images with layers of encaustic wax and paint using pigmented oil sticks and inks. The Shot From the Highline series is something that I wanted to create as I live next to the Highline path and find it an amazing work of art. I found a balance between the landscapes and the cityscapes to create these storyboards as I did with the Watertower Series, which was shot in New York City in 1999. Both the Highline and SoHo’s iconic water towers are historically important and architecturally beautiful features of the New York skyline. My focus is currently on my African series One Tribe. The rich texture of the encaustic wax allows me to capture the beauty of the land where man was born."
