There are 15 artists presenting their art from their studios or homes on Shelter Island for the sixth annual ARTSI Open Studio Event to be held August 15 and 16, 2015 from noon to 5 p.m. each day. The studio tour will feature completed artworks and allow visitors to see some of the process that goes into making the work.
But before the event arrives, the Artists of Shelter Island (ARTSI) are presenting their art and process online so visitors can preview what can be experienced in each artist’s studio during the self-guided tour. DIANA MALCOLMSON
Diana Malcolmson spent her childhood in the heart of the English countryside, in the southern county of Hampshire. She learned to ride horses at the early age of four. She came to the United States in 1967 and moved permanently to Shelter Island in 1971. She bought a pony for her daughter and soon found that she was teaching many of the island children to ride. In 1986 she founded Hampshire Farms Equestrian Center Ltd. on Shelter Island which she ran until 2006.
Malcolmson started her painting career at London University and when she moved to New York she studied with Stephen Csoka, Leon Krol and Robert Phillips at the National Academy. She studied at the Art's Students League with the portrait painter William Draper, who painted the official presidential portrait of John F. Kennedy. She became a student of Henry Hensche of Provincetown, Rhode Island, who was the right hand assistant to Charles Hawthorne, the founder of the Cape Cod School of Art. She received her B.F.A. and B.S. at the Southampton Campus of Long Island University.

Malcomson’s art focuses on equestrian and landscape. She pursues her love for painting, capturing the effects of sunlight in nature and the transformation of color by the warmth of the sun.

JOE REILLY
Joe Reilly is a retired public school teacher who lives in Stone Ridge, NY and Shelter Island. He has been drawing and painting since childhood. Largely self-taught, he works entirely from direct observation, in various paint media, including acrylic, oil, gouache, and watercolor.
Reilly has been exhibiting and selling paintings since the early 1990’s. For ten years he was a member of The Exhibitor’s Coop, a group of artists based in South Orange, NJ. He has exhibited in many galleries and other venues in New Jersey and New York. From 2006 to 2010 his work was continually shown at The Wish Rock Studio Gallery on Shelter Island, NY.

In 1998, Joe Reilly took his first bookbinding course and has been making, exhibiting and selling his handmade books ever since. He is currently a member of the Book Arts Roundtable, a group of book artists, also based in New Jersey. He is currently on the faculty of the Rosendale School of Arts, teaching classes in making books by hand.
Mr. Reilly’s paintings and books are in private collections in many locations across the United States.

SUSAN SCHROTT
As a fiber artist, Susan Schrott synthesizes her life experiences into deeply personal yet uplifting images. The majority of her artwork features strong, joyful women and Trees of Life. Exquisite hand dyed fabrics, intense threadwork, embellishments such as crystals and beads add visual texture and depth. Her artwork has gained critical attention and has been featured in New York galleries as well as museums and venues around the country.

Susan’s artwork is included in numerous private collections and public and permanent Installations: Jewish Appeal (UJA), Mount Kisco, New York and in Israel at: Rehovott Tel Hashomer-Shiba Hospital/Rehabilitation Center, Rambam Hospital the Children's Pavilion, & School in Rishon Lezion. She is a professional member of the Pen and Brush in New York City, Studio Art Quilt Associates. Susan is a Diplomate in Clinical Social Work, Licensed Psychotherapist, Certified Eating Disorder Specialist and Certified Kripalu Yoga Instructor who splits her time between New York City and Shelter Island where she has her newly constructed art studio “Bramble Hill Bounty.”

JUNE SHATKEN
June Shatken has been making art for most of her life. Her art spans many mediums and she enjoys combining and layering them for unique and unexpected results.
Since 2005, Shatken has owned The Brookside Art Studio (New Jersey) where she has been actively creating as well as inspiring and teaching others to pursue their own creativity.

June Shatken’s art is included in numerous private collections throughout the country. She has been involved in ARTSI since 2008. Most recently, her work was exhibited at the Shelter Island Town Hall, Spring 2014.
