Southampton Arts Center Screens Documentary: Food for Thought, Food for Life

The Southampton Arts Center will screen the documentary Food for Thought, Food for Life on Thursday, July 23 at 7:30 p.m. We want our food fast, convenient and cheap, but at what cost? As farms have become supersized, our environment suffers and so does the quality of our food. Food for Thought, Food for Life explains the downsides of current agribusiness practices, and also introduces us to farmers, chefs, researchers, educators, and advocates who are providing solutions.

Hosted by Susan Rockefeller. Panel discussion moderated by Brian Halweil, Editor-in-Chief, Edible East End, along with representatives from Quail Hill Farm, Sylvestor Manor, and Amber Waves to follow. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/1894082.

The Endless Summer 50th Anniversary Outdoor Screening at The Parrish Art Museum

The Parrish Art Museum, the Surfing Heritage & Cultural Center, the Montauk Surf Museum and Pilgrim Surf + Supply present a special sunset outdoor screening of Bruce Brown’s seminal globetrotting surf movie The Endless Summer on Friday, July 24, 2015, at 7 p.m. NYC rock band Gent Treadly will play classic surf tunes prior to the screening, from 7 p.m. to sunset.

The screening will take place on the Stewart F. Lane and Bonnie Comley Foundation Event Lawn. In case of rain, the screening will be held on the Mildred C. Brinn Terrace. Bring lawn chairs and blankets. Film length: 92 minutes. Tickets are $10, and free for Members, Children and Students. Order tickets here.

Grammy-nominated Eroica Trio performs Bruce Wolosoff’s "The Loom" with  Special Guest Eric Fischl at Guild Hall

The Grammy-nominated Eroica Trio will perform Bruce Wolosoff’s new composition “The Loom” composed for them and inspired by the watercolors of Eric Fischl on Friday, July 24, 2015 at 8 p.m. at Guild Hall. The Grammy-nominated Eroica Trio enraptures audiences with flawless technical virtuosity, irresistible enthusiasm and sensual elegance. The three women who make up this celebrated ensemble electrify the concert stage with their passionate performances. Also on the program will be trios by Bach, Suk and Brahms. The performance will be followed by a discussion with Eroica Trio, composer Bruce Wolosoff and artist Eric Fischl.

Lecture with Carrie Mae Weems at Guild Hall

The lecture with video clips by artist Carrie Mae Weems takes place on Sunday, July 26, 2015 at 3 p.m. Considered one of the most influential American artists, Weems has investigated family dynamics, cultural identity, class, political systems, and the consequences of power. Her work has been shown nationally and internationally – including the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo in Seville, Spain; the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, The Frist Center for Visual Art in Nashville and most recently at Solomon Guggenheim Museum in New York. Her work can be found in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art; MOMA; The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.

Admission is free.

"The 28th Annual Pollock-Krasner House Film Screening - Peggy Guggenheim: Art Addict" at Guild Hall

Peggy Guggenheim: Art Addict screens on Sunday, July 26, 2015 at 5 p.m. The film is an intimate portrait of the life of the art icon directed by Lisa Immordino Vreeland (Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel). Based on the biography of Peggy Guggenheim, an heiress to the Guggenheim family who would become a central figure in the modern art movement. As she moved through the cultural upheaval of the 20th century, she collected not only art but artists. Her colorful personal history included Samuel Beckett, Max Ernst, Jackson Pollock, Alexander Calder, Marcel Duchamp, and others. While fighting through personal tragedy, she maintained her vision to build an important collection of modern art. Director Lisa Immordino Vreeland will be in attendance at the screening.

Shelter Island Birdhouse Exhibition and Auction

The Shelter Island Birdhouse Exhibition and Auction has an Opening Reception on Sunday, July 26, 2015 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Galerie Mallory on Shelter Island. The auction benefits the Peconic Land Trust. The birdhouses will be on exhibition and available for bidding through August 9, 2015. A Closing Reception will take place on August 9 from 4 to 6 p.m.

Birdhouse designs are by local Shelter Island and East End artists, conservationists and celebrities including: Jonathan Adler and Simon Doonan, Lois Bender, Jackie Black, Kiki Boucher and Robin Drake,
 EJ Camp, Scott Chaskey, James DeMartis, Jim Dougherty, Marie Eiffel and Jason Penney, Margaret Garrett, Edith Gawler, Bonnie Grice, John v.H. Halsey, Sylvia Hommert, Randy Kolhoff, Bennett Konesni, Scott Murphy, Gabrielle Raacke, Gordian Raacke, David Rankin, Anna Salsedo, Robert Waife, Michael Weismann, Cynthia Wells, Rhea White and Steve Schappacher, and James Wojcek.
