Guild Hall museum got their summer season started with some selfie fun at the exhibition opening of “Selfies & Portraits of the East End” on Saturday, June 20, 2015. The group show presents self-portraits and portraits made by a star line up of Hamptons-connected artists. The exhibition includes paintings, photograph and sculpture made by Ross Bleckner, Eric Fischl, Elizabeth Peyton, Julian Schnabel, Joan Semmel, Cindy Sherman, Billy Sullivan, Robert Wilson and others.
The exhibition was introduced through a pre-opening panel discussion by some of the exhibiting artists. Afterwards, artists mingled with the crowd and were often located near their work and ready to answer questions.
Now here’s the fun part: Guild Hall staff circulated throughout the opening with a selfie stick to assist the taking of cell phone selfies. Exhibiting artists indulged and exhibition-goers indulged with sharing encouraged with the Twitter hashtag #Guild_HallofEH.
Crowds ebbed and flowed throughout the two hour opening. In an adjacent gallery and the outdoor Minikes Garden, a Members Only VIP Garden Reception took place and lent some some extra energy to the festivities. A solo show of art by Hal Buckner was exhibited in both areas.
