Student art arrives at both East End museums this month. Elsewhere on Long Island, a photography exhibition made with unusual techniques continues at the Heckscher Art Museum and Asian art is the subject of exhibitions at two Nassau County art museums. The Islip Art Museum opens a new exhibition featuring work made by international-born artists now working in America. Following is the full list of exhibitions on view at Long Island museums.
DAN FLAVIN ART INSTITUTE – BRIDGEHAMPTON, NY
“A FRIENDSHIP: CARL ANDRE’S WORKS ON PAPER FROM THE LEWITT COLLECTION” continues through March 2, 2015. The exhibition is presented in two consecutive exhibitions. The first section, on view through Oct. 18, presents Andre’s correspondences with LeWitt and rare works on paper. The second section will be on view from Oct. 24, 2014 through March 2, 2015, and will focus on Andre’s poetry.
ON PERMANENT VIEW is an installation by Dan Flavin (1933-1996) of nine works in fluorescent light made between 1963 and 1981. The exhibition follows Flavin’s art practice from when he began to work solely with standard fluorescent fixtures and tubes to just before the presentation of his new art form was realized.

EAST HAMPTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY – EAST HAMPTON, NY
The East Hampton Historical Society museum is made up of six buildings located in East Hampton Town, several which present temporary exhibitions in season. Open year-round is the Osborn-Jackson House, ca. 1720, which features furnishings of a well-to-do post-Colonial East End family. Information on upcoming exhibitions will be announced as it arrives.

GUILD HALL MUSEUM – EAST HAMPTON, NY
“STUDENT ARTS FESTIVAL PART I, GRADES K-8” opens January 17 and continues through February 22. An Opening Reception will be held on January 24 from 2 to 4 p.m. The Student Arts Festival celebrates young artists from Bridgehampton to Montauk with over 3,500 student works on view. “Student Arts Festival Part II, Grades 9 - 12” takes place from March 7 to April 12.

HECKSCHER MUSEUM OF ART – HUNTINGTON, NY
“MODERN ALCHEMY: EXPERIMENTS IN PHOTOGRAPHY” continues through March 15, 2015. The exhibition features 20th and 21st century artists who have pushed the boundaries of photography though untraditional techniques and processes.
“FERDINAND RICHARDT’S NIAGARA: A STUDY IN LANDSCAPE PAINTING” continues through April 12, 2015. The exhibition examines Ferdinand Richardt’s Niagara in the context of landscape tradition. On view will be European and American works from the Museum’s Permanent Collection.

HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY MUSEUM – HEMPSTEAD, NY
“EXPLORING THE CENTURIES: 3rd – 20th CENTURY ASIAN ART” continues through February 8, 2015.
Co-curated by Ms. Albert and Kristy Caratzola, the exhibition into three categories: Buddhism; Devotional Sculpture; and Flowers, Animals and the Seasons. Works include woodblock prints, hand-painted scrolls, metal works and sculpture that highlight esteemed and centuries-old artistic practices and traditions from the cultures of Japan, China, India, Tibet and Thailand.

ISLIP ART MUSEUM – EAST ISLIP, NY
“REMEMBERING THINGS PAST” opens on January 18 and continues through March 29. A Reception will be held on February 8 from 1 to 4 p.m. The exhibition features foreign-born artists working in America. “Remembering Things Past” is an expansion of an exhibition previously on view at the Patchogue Arts Gallery.
“ALEXANDER PERCY: THE TEXTURE OF COLOR” opens January 18 and continues through March 29. A Reception will be held on February 8 from 1 to 4 p.m. Percy creates textured works through layers of paint that build on the canvas. The series of paintings will hang in the Museum’s gift shop.

LONG ISLAND MUSEUM – STONY BROOK, NY
“LIMarts” HERE AND NOW” continues through February 1 in the museum's Visitors Center. The exhibition includes 80 works from LIMarts members. On January 25, the panel discussion "The Artist's Vision: Understanding the Creative Inspiration and Process" will take place from 2 - 4 p.m. The discussion features members of LIMarts. A Q&A session will follow.

NASSAU COUNTY MUSEUM OF ART – ROSLYN HARBOR, NY
“CHINA THEN AND NOW” continues through March 8, 2015. The exhibition presents Chinese works from the classical, early modern, and contemporary periods. The show includes a large group of Ming and Qing Dynasty porcelains from the Frick Collection and ;large-scale classical stone sculpture from the Sackler Collection. This is the first exhibition devoted to Chinese art mounted by the museum. Presented in three galleries, the show also features ink paintings by contemporary Beijing artist Liu Dan (b. 1953).
The show is co-curated by guest curators Amy G. Poster, Curator Emerita of Asian Art at the Brooklyn Museum, and Kaijun Chen, Ph.D., post-doctoral Fellow at the Max-Planck-Institute for the History of Science.
“LONG ISLAND COLLECTS THE ARTS OF CHINA” continues through March 8, 2015. The exhibition presents art in a variety of mediums from Long Island collectors. Many works have never been exhibited in public before.
“GAVIN RAIN” continues through March 8, 2015 in the Contemporary Collectors Gallery. A native of Cape Town, South Africa, Gavin Rain works primarily in a neo-pointillist style and is influenced by Seurat, the Russian avant-garde art of the 1900s, and work by architects.

PARRISH ART MUSEUM – WATER MILL, NY
“STEVEN AND WILLIAM LADD: MARY QUEEN OF THE UNIVERSE” continues through Jan. 19, 2015. The exhibition features sculpture, drawings, and prints by the collaborative sibling team of Steven and William Ladd.
“ALAN SHIELDS: IN MOTION” continues through Jan. 19, 2015. The exhibition features sculpture, installations, and video documentation focusing on movement.
“STUDENT EXHIBITION” opens January 31 and continues through March 1. More than 1,000 young artists from private, public, parochial, and home schools will participate in the exhibition.
