Steve Haweeli has played a crucial role in conceptualizing and promoting this event. His painting “Blues at Louse” is an abstract rendering of a location most East Hamptonites know well:  Louse Point.

Haweeli explained his reasons for supporting this effort this way:” I have known Spero for decades and have a tremendous amount of faith in his work. He works with the toughest of patients and he’s on the front line of helping people with their addictions.”

He continued, “The East End art community is a wide yet close group and collectively we will almost always donate a piece of art of proceeds from an art sale to a worthy cause. Many of us have lived on the edge of addiction, so this one strikes home for all of us.”

Haweeli is the featured artist for the "Arts Against Addition" fundraiser.

Proceeds from the fundraiser go towards:

  • Providing treatment scholarships. A number of East End artists, musicians and writers will directly benefit by having access to this kind of highly personalized treatment.
  • Raising awareness that creative individuals are more susceptible to addictive illness than the general population.

Treatment:

Counseling is done through the QTherapy Institute: an online counseling center.

The QTherapy Institute does science-based drug treatment for creative people who don’t respond well to rehabs and 12 Step programs, though many clients eventually return to AA or some other support group like SMART Recovery.

Non-traditional fundraiser:

Spero Alexio, who created the Arts Against Addiction, tells ArtHub “The fundraiser is non-traditional just like my counseling center. The QTherapy Institute isn't a nonprofit, but here's the interesting thing...we aren't for profit either. What we stand for is effective treatment of addictive illness... doing whatever is necessary to bring the client back to health.”
