Eyes are drawn on the Hamptons cultural scene with the Hamptons International Film Festival arriving Columbus Day Weekend and the art scene still going strong. That doesn’t mean, however, that Hamptons artists are shunning New York City.
Following is a select list of art exhibitions on view in New York City with a Hamptons connection. Exhibitions opening this month are listed first. Those closing within the month are listed next. OCTOBER 10 (THURSDAY)
“HIROYUKI HAMADA” has an Opening Reception on Oct. 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lori Bookstein Fine Art in New York City. The exhibition continues through Nov. 9. The solo show features recent works by Hamada. The artist is based in East Hampton, NY.

“MICHAEL ST. JOHN: THESE DAYS” has an Opening Reception from 6 to 8 p.m. at KARMA book store in New York City. The exhibition continues through Nov. 2. KARMA has a second seasonal location in Amangansett.

“I slept, but my heart was awake”, an exhibition of new work by Susanna Bluhm, opens Oct 10 at Kathryn Markel Fine Arts in Chelsea. The exhibition continues through Nov. 9. Kathryn Markel Fine Arts has a second gallery based in Bridgehampton, NY.

“OUT OF THEIR ELEMENTS: JILL BONOVITZ, TONI ROSS, CAROLE SEBOROVSKI” has an Opening Reception on Oct. 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Ricco/Maresca in Chelsea. The exhibition continues through Nov 16. All three artists utilize clay as a base element but works in different mediums. Ross is based in Wainscott and New York City.

OCTOBER 5 (SATURDAY)
“CALLIGRAFFITI 1984 / 2013″ continues through Oct. 5. At Leila Heller Gallery in Chelsea. The exhibition Curated by Jeffrey Deitch, the show is based on a similar exhibition presented in 1984 at Leila Heller’s former Uptown Gallery. Included are works by over 50 artists including Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, Cy Twombly, Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat and LA2. Pollock and Krasner worked in Springs in the Hamptons.

OCTOBER 30 (WEDNESDAY)
“FLOWER GARDEN” continues through Oct. 30. The group show is a “sculptural installation/digital video interface/symposium by a multi-generational group of female curators, artists, writers, and viewers coming together as participants to reinterpret Vito Acconci’s iconic performance Seed Bed through a contemporary lens. (Seed Bed was presented in 1972 at the Sonnabend Gallery) through a contemporary lens. Included is Christa Maiwald of East Hampton, NY. The show is curated by Bonnie Rychlak who is also based in the Hamptons and New York City.

“SEPTEMBER SELECTIONS” continues through Nov. 2 at Edelman Arts on the Upper East Side. The exhibition presents gallery highlights of iconic artists. They include David Hockney, Robert Indiana, Franz Kline, Willem de Kooning, Roberto Matta, Theodoros Stamos, Tom Wesselmann, Andy Warhol and others.
