DISPATCH - SEPT 9, 2013

HAMPTONS, NY-

The 13th Annual Box Art Auction came out swinging on Saturday night when a crowd of supporters turned out and helped raise around $60,000 to benefit East End Hospice (EEH). The Box Art Auction is a unique benefit on the East End in that area artists create a unique artwork based on a the humble box. Artists are invited to participate by curator Arlene Bujese. From there, all bets are off as artists strive to make art that stretches boundaries and, sometimes, competes against boxes made in the past.

Some artists have made a box since the fundraiser's inception. They include John Battle, Marilyn Church, Janet Culbertson, Eric Ernst, Jim Gemake, April Gornick, William King, Dennis Leri, Connie Fox, Walter Schwab, Roseann Schwab, Anne Sager, Randall Rosenthal, and Diane Mayo.

This year's benefit included works by around 90 artists, according to EEH. Contributing artists included Julie Small Gamby, Daniel Pollera, Frank Wimberley, Carol Hunt, Priscilla Heine, Stephanie Brody-Lederman, Casey Chalem Anderson, Stan Goldberg, Mary Laspia, Tracy Harris, Gabrielle T. Raacke, Don Saco, James Kennedy, Sarah Jaffe Turnbull, Toni Ross, Charles Waller and others.

Following are some of the people and artworks that made the 13th Annual Box Art Auction a success. All photos are by Tom Kochie.
