SAG HARBOR, NY-

Documentaries and prints haven claimed center stage at the Sag Harbor Whaling and Historic Museum for the dual show Life As It Is - Unscripted" and "Almost Beachfront" with prints by Scott Sandell. Making a rare appearance during the Opening Reception was documentarian DA Pennebaker.

"Life As It Is - Unscripted" presents works and objects used to make the groundbreaking documentaries by Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus. The exhibition includes film footage, movie posters and some of the cameras used to make documentaries.

During the openings, screenings were held inside and outside of the history museum. Tonight,  Pennebaker’s documentary "Monterey Pop" will screen at 6 p.m. at the museum. Reservations are recommended.

Pennebaker was a pioneer of direct cinema with rock concerts and the performing arts placed frequently in front of his lens. His films include Don’t Look Back (1967) with Bob Dylan, Monterey Pop (1968), Sweet Toronto (1971) with The Plastic Ono Band, Alice Cooper (1970), Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (1973) with David Bowie, Jimi Plays Monterey (1986) with Jimi Hendrix and many others.

Hegedus has been making films with Pennebaker for around 20 years. The couple have been married since 1982.

The centerpiece for "Almost Beachfront" is a series of bright prints suspended in the museum's staircase and strung on a single line that can conjure the idea of kites climbing into a towering sky. Sandall's works were made at the Almost Beachfront print studio of Stony Brook Southampton in Southampton, NY.

Sandell's prints are exhibited or installed across the United States.

The Opening Reception for both exhibitions brought the Sag Harbor cultural community out in droves to meet the artists, celebrate the exhibitions and to support the museum. All three exhibiting artists are based in Sag Harbor, NY. The exhibitions are the final art shows for the season.
