Blockbuster exhibitions have arrived at Long Island Museums. The Parrish Art Museum unveils a quartet of new exhibitions and Guild Hall opens a solo show of new work by Chuck Close. The Sag Harbor Whaling Museum continues its line-up of noteworthy shows with works and films by D.A. Pennabaker and a solo show featuring Charlotte Parks's works from the 1950s opens at the Pollock-Krasner House. The Heckscher Museum of Art opens a trio of shows including a retrospective of the Long Island painter Stan Brodsky and an exhibition of recent artwork acquisitions.

Following is a list of all the museum exhibitions on view this month in the Hamptons and across Long Island:

HAMPTONS

DAN FLAVIN ART INSTITUTE – BRIDGEHAMPTON

“JOHN CHAMBERLAIN: IT AIN’T CHEAP” continues through Oct 30. The exhibition presents six of the artist’s rarely exhibited metal paintings from 1965 and the 1965 sculpture “It Ain’t Cheap.” The works are from a series of 12-inch-square paintings that were presented at Leo Castelli Gallery in January 1965 in the solo exhibition “Paintings done in auto lacquer and metal flake on formica.”

ON PERMANENT VIEW is an installation by Dan Flavin (1933-1996) of nine works in fluorescent light made between 1963 and 1981. The exhibition follows Flavin’s art practice from when he began to work solely with standard fluorescent fixtures and tubes to just before the presentation of his new art form was realized.

EAST HAMPTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY – EAST HAMPTON, NY

"JAZZ AGE EAST HAMPTON (1919-1933): CLOTHES, CLUBS & CONTRABAND" continues through Oct. 13 at the Clinton Academy Museum. Curators Tours will take place on Aug. 17 and Sept. 7. The exhibition includes historic photographs, vignettes of period fashion, decorative arts with a special section  devoted to the Ladies Village Improvement Society (LVIS) Fair and the Maidstone Club.

GUILD HALL MUSEUM – EAST HAMPTON, NY

CHUCK CLOSE: RECENT WORKS” opens Aug. 10 and continues through Oct. 14. The exhibition presents recent paintings, prints and tapestries. Previously at Guild Hall, Close had a one person exhibition of his large-scale Polaroid photographs in 1991. He has been a part-time resident of the East End for over 40 years.

“JOEL PERLMAN” remains on view through Oct. 14. Perlman is exhibiting welded steel, bronze, aluminum, and iron sculptures. The solo show will present works outdoors in the Frieda and Roy Furman Sculpture Garden and inside Guild Hall at the Wasserstein Family Gallery.

PARRISH ART MUSEUM – WATER MILL, NY

“ANGELS, DEMONS, AND SAVAGES: POLLOCK, OSSORIO, DUBUFFET” continues through Oct. 27. The exhibition explores the cross-cultural artistic dialogue between Jackson Pollock, Alfonso Ossorio and Jean Dubuffet. It is the first to explore the relationship between the American Abstract Expressionism painter, the Philippines-born artist and art patron, and the French painter and sculptor.

“MICHELLE STUART: DRAWN FROM NATURE” continues through Oct. 27. The solo show includes 50 works ranging from 1968 to the present that encompass a range of mediums and highlight her early contributions to process-based sculpture and Land Art along with her use of nontraditional natural materials and her passion for photography.

“PLATFORM: JOSEPHINE MECKSEPER” continues through Oct. 14. The exhibit includes indoor and outdoor sculpture installations in response to the museum’s architecture and collection.

“SELECTIONS FROM THE PERMANENT COLLECTION” are on long-term view. Exhibitions include “Look and Look Again: Contemporary Observation,” “American Views: Artists at Home and Abroad,” “William Merritt Chase: A Life in Art,” “Fairfield Porter: Modern American Master,”  “Esteban Vicente: Portrait of the Artist” and “Collective Conversations: Abstract Expressionism, Figuration, and Pop.”

PARRISH ROAD SHOW - “AND ALSO, I HAVE NO IDEA" by SYDNEY ALBERTINI opens Aug. 10 at the John Little Studio in Springs, NY. It remains on view through Sept. 2. The site-specific installation presents Albertini’s soft sculptures and costumes. Visitors are encouraged slip into the costumes and sculptural heads and will be photographed against the backdrop of the site. The installation is located at John Little Studio at Duck Creek Edwards Farm, 367 Three Mile Harbor-Hog Creek Highway, East Hampton, NY 11937.

PARRISH ART MUSEUM - PARRISH ROAD SHOW: ALMOND ZIGMUND’S: “INTERRUPTIONS REPEATED” opens Aug. 24 at the Sag Harbor Whaling & Historical Museum in Sag Harbor, NY. An opening reception will be held on Aug. 24 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The exhibit remains on view through Sept. 10.

The installation is made up of two large-scale works placed in the parlor of the Sag Harbor Whaling & Historical Museum. Bisecting the room, Zigmund’s blockade-like structures provide a dramatic contrast to the ornate plaster ceiling and carved wooden door frames of this Greek Revival home.

POLLOCK-KRASNER HOUSE AND STUDY CENTER – SPRINGS, NY

"CHARLOTTE PARK: THE 1950s" opens Aug. 1 and continues through Oct. 31. The exhibition features paintings and works on paper. In the mid-1950s, Park began to create vivid canvases consisting of complex and charged relationships among forms which often evoked the natural world.

SAG HARBOR WHALING AND HISTORIC MUSEUM

"LIFE AS IT IS - UNSCRIPTED" opens on Aug. 2 and continues through Aug 21. The exhibition features film footage, movie posters and even some of the cameras used to make groundbreaking documentaries by D.A. Pennabaker and Chris Hegedus. Pennabaker was one of the pioneers of direct cinema.

"ALMOST BEACHFRONT with PRINTS BY SCOTT SANDELL" opens on Aug. 2 and continues through Aug. 21. The exhibition features prints by Sandell that were made at the Almost Beachfront printing studio at Stony Brook Southampton.

SOUTHAMPTON HISTORICAL MUSEUM & RESEARCH CENTER – SOUTHAMPTON, NY

“FABULOUS FISH” - A solo show by John Rist, Jr. - opens Aug. 10 and continues through Nov. 2 at the Southampton Historical Museum and Research Center. An Opening Reception will be held on Aug. 10 from 4 to 6 p.m.

WATER MILL MUSEUM

VINTAGE PENNY POSTCARDS remains on view through Oct. 14. The exhibition features dozens of postcards from 1907 to 1955 featuring views of Water Mill and its environs. The exhibition also includes a stereoscopic viewer and scenic view cards of national sites.

"27th ANNUAL QUILT SHOW & SALE" opens on Aug. 16 and continues through Sept. 15.

EASTERN LONG ISLAND

SOUTHOLD HISTORICAL SOCIETY

“HERMAN N. HYNEMAN: A JEWISH ARTIST REDISCOVERED PAINTING EXHIBIT” continues through Sept. 21 at the Cosden-Price Gallery. The exhibit features the paintings of Hyneman a notable painter in the 19th century whose work often included women set amid the backdrop of New York City monuments.

The Cosden-Price Gallery is located at the Society’s Reichert Family Center at 54127 Main Road, Southold, NY 11971.

“WICKHAM MURDERS EXHIBIT” continues through Oct. 12 at the Mayne Gallery of the Ann Currie-Bell House in Southold, NY. The exhibit features items from the trial and murder of James Wickham, a landowner who in 1854 was gruesomely murdered by Nicholas Behan, a worker on his estate.

SUFFOLK COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

“MATERIAL, FORM AND PROCESS: THE FURNITURE OF DAVID N. EBNER" continues through Sept. 28. The exhibition features 20 furniture pieces made by Ebner plus his drawings designs. Ebner is an artist and craftsman who works in four modes: classical impressions of furniture, turned objects, sculptural furniture and furniture.

“DENNIS PULESTON: EXPLORER, NATURALIST AND ARTIST" continues through Sept. 28. The exhibition presents 250 of Puleston’s bird paintings plus his journals, awards and photographs. Puleston is one of the founders of the Environmental Defense Fund.

SUFFOLK COUNTY

HECKSCHER MUSEUM OF ART – HUNTINGTON, NY

"STAN BRODSKY: RETROSPECTIVE" opens Aug. 17 and continues through Dec. 1. A Members Reception will be held on Sept. 21 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The retrospective spans 50 years and traces Brodsky's evolution from early representational works focusing on architectonic city structures, through the minimalist landscapes executed during the artist’s early years on Long Island, to the Abstract Expressionist works that manifest Brodsky’s deepest engagement with the painting process.

"RECENT ACQUISITIONS" opens Aug. 17 and continues through Dec. 1. A Members Reception will be held on Sept. 21 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The exhibition presents over 24 works acquired by the Museum since 2010, representing a broad range of style and subject matter. Included are works by Thomas Moran, Max Weber, Bruce Lieberman, Theodore Stamos, Nicolas Carone, Stanley Twardowicz, Neil Scholl and Emlio Sánchez.

"PICTURE PERFECT: SELECTIONS FROM THE PERMANENT COLLECTION" opens Aug. 17 and continues through April 27, 2014. The exhibition presents art appealing to a wide range of aesthetic sensibilities. The exhibition is presented in conjunction with the Public Art Initiative Teen Poetry Project, Poetry for the HART, sponsored by the Town of Huntington.

“CAR CULTURE: ART AND THE AUTOMOBILE” continues through Aug. 11.

ISLIP ART MUSEUM – EAST ISLIP, NY

“CONEY ISLAND AND JONES BEACH: EMPIRES BY THE SEA” continues through Dec. 29. The exhibition explores these two Long Island landmarks through an array of object, rare photographs, paintings, prints and archival film clips.

“COUNTRY SCENES FOR CITY PATRONS: WORKS BY WILLIAM SIDNEY MOUNT” continues through Sept. 2. William Sidney Mount was a prominent painter of rural scenes in the 1800′s.

HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY MUSEUM – HEMPSTEAD, NY

The museum will open its next exhibition on Sept. 3.

'ARNOLD NEWMAN: LUMINARIES OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY IN ART, POLITICS AND CULTURE" opens on Sept. 3 and continues through Dec. 13. The exhibition of photographic portraiture by Arnold Newman highlighting the innovative minds and personalities that gave rise to the ideas and concepts that shaped the 20th century.

“AftermodernisM 2013 A.M.” continues through Oct. 13. The exhibition presents works by five contemporary artists in focused installations. Exhibiting are Nina Chanel Abney, Justin Craun, Wendell Gladstone, Erik Parks and Tom Sanford.
