DISPATCH - JULY 9, 2013 (12:30 p.m.)

EAST HAMPTON, NY-

Fine art isn't always confined to the realm of artists. One of the best manifestations is LongHouse Reserve's annual invitational garden container exhibition. Now in its sixth year, "Planters: ON+OFF the Ground" has garnered the attention of both the art and landscape design worlds for its exhibition of unique garden container designs.

The planters in the Invitational are a far cry from simple pots found in retail stores. Closer to art installations than function-only repositories for plants, each garden container combines fine art concepts with intimate knowledge of plants, design and sustainability on the East End.

This year featured works by 24 designers hailing from mostly East End landscape design companies. Entries were judged by three experts who select a First Place and an Honorable Mention. Attendees could vote for a People's Choice Award, whose announcement wrapped up the event.

This year's jurors were Tovah Martin, Paula Deitz and Jack deLashment.

First Place awards went to Daydream by Alexandra Leighton (Garden Schemes) and Motion, Meditation, Moss by Harvey Bernstein (Professor at Pratt Institute. Daydream was separately selected by both Martin and Deitz.  Motion, Meditation, Moss was selected by deLashment.

Honorable Mentions were awarded to On + Off + Inside + Out by Dennnis Schrader (Landcraft Environments Ltd), Totems by Adam Baron, Suvi Asch and Hal Goldberg (Hal Goldberg Gardens and Landscapes & Folia Gardens) and Daydream by Leighton.

The People's Choice Award went to Urban Jungle (Summerhill Landscapes). Votes were cast by 283 of the 412 people who attended the event.
