LONG ISLAND, NY-

June brings much excitement to museum on Long Island. A solo show by Alex Katz opens at the Nassau County Museum of Art. A trio of shows opens at Guild Hall in East Hampton to kick off their summer exhibition season. A duo of exhibition opens at the Suffolk County Historical Museum that continues all summer long.

In the Hamptons, museums opening for the season and featuring art to kick things off are Water Mill Museum and the Sag Harbor Whaling Museum. Worth noting is a solo show of watercolors by Claus Hoie at East Hampton Historical Society.

HAMPTONS

DAN FLAVIN ART INSTITUTE – BRIDGEHAMPTON

“JOHN CHAMBERLAIN: IT AIN’T CHEAP” continues through Oct 30. The exhibition presents six of the artist’s rarely exhibited metal paintings from 1965 and the 1965 sculpture “It Ain’t Cheap.” The works are from a series of 12-inch-square paintings that were presented at Leo Castelli Gallery in January 1965 in the solo exhibition “Paintings done in auto lacquer and metal flake on formica.”

ON PERMANENT VIEW is an installation by Dan Flavin (1933-1996) of nine works in fluorescent light made between 1963 and 1981. The exhibition follows Flavin’s art practice from when he began to work solely with standard fluorescent fixtures and tubes to just before the presentation of his new art form was realized.

EAST HAMPTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY - EAST HAMPTON, NY

Claus Hoie watercolors: "INSECTS: REAL AND IMAGINARY" opens at the Clinton Academy Museum on June 1. The show remains on view through June 30. The exhibition presents a survey of bold and colorful insect-inspired paintings by Hoie. The Clinton Academy Museum is located at 151 Main Street, East Hampton, NY 11937. www.easthamptonhistory.org.

GUILD HALL MUSEUM – EAST HAMPTON, NY

“JOHN ALEXANDER” opens June 15 and remains on view through July 28. Alexander, a resident of the East End for 30 years, has created a new body of work for this exhibition that includes landscapes incorporated with his representational/surreal style of painting and drawing.

“ARTISTS & WRITERS: THEY PLAYED IN THE GAME” opens June 15 and remains on view through July 28. The exhibition in celebration of East Hampton’s 65th annual Artists & Writers Softball Game which takes place on August 17. The show is co-curated by Elena Prohaska Glinn and Christina Mossaides Strassfield, Museum Director and Chief Curator of Guild Hall.

“JOEL PERLMAN” opens June 15 and remains on view through October 14. Perlman’s welded steel, aluminum, bronze, and iron sculptures will be on view in the Frieda and ROy Furman Sculpture Garden.

PARRISH ART MUSEUM – WATER MILL, NY

“ALICE AYCOCK DRAWINGS: SOME STORIES ARE WORTH REPEATING” continues through July 13. The exhibition is in partnership with The Grey Art Gallery at NYU (New York University). The exhibition is presented in two separate yet related venues: The Parrish presents 55 works from 1984 to the present and The Grey Art Gallery presents 48 works from 1971-1984.

“SELECTIONS FROM THE PERMANENT COLLECTION” are on long term view. Exhibitions include “Look and Look Again: Contemporary Observation,” “American Views: Artists at Home and Abroad,” “William Merritt Chase: A Life in Art,” “Fairfield Porter: Modern American Master,”  “Esteban Vicente: Portrait of the Artist” and “Collective Conversations: Abstract Expressionism, Figuration, and Pop.”

POLLOCK-KRASNER HOUSE AND STUDY CENTER – SPRINGS, NY

"NICOLAS CARONE: THE EAST HAMPTON YEARS" remains on view through July 27. An opening reception will be held on June 30 from 5 to 7 p.m. The artist's sons, Christian and Claude Carone, will speak at the reception. The exhibition is made up of nine paintings done by Carone, including paintings done in the 1950's, when he lived in Springs, Long Island.

SOUTHAMPTON HISTORICAL MUSEUM & RESEARCH CENTER – SOUTHAMPTON, NY

"EXTRAORDINARILY ORDINARILY! PHOTOGRAPHS BY MALLORY SAMSON" remains on view through August 3. A reception will take place on June 15 from r to 6 p.m. at the Rogers Mansion. Samson will exhibit photographs of objects from the Southampton Historical Museum's collection, including antique toys, clothing, and other objects.

"SOUTHAMPTON LANDSCAPES: PAINTINGS BY PAT GARRITY" remains on view through August 3. A reception will take place on June 15 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Rogers Mansion.

"HISTORIC LANDMARKS OF SOUTHAMPTON: PAINTINGS BY KEVIN O'MALLEY" remains on view through August 3. A reception will take place on June 15 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Rogers Mansion.

WATER MILL MUSEUM 

VINTAGE PENNY POSTCARDS opens on June 1 and remains on view throughout the season. The exhibition features dozens of postcards from 1907 to 1955 featuring views of Water Mill and its environs. The exhibition also includes a stereoscopic viewer and scenic view cards of national sites.

"21st ANNUAL MEMBERS' ART SHOW" opens June 20 and has a Brunch Reception on June 23 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The exhibition remains on view through July 8.

EASTERN LONG ISLAND

SOUTHOLD HISTORICAL SOCIETY – SOUTHOLD, NY

"PLEIN AIR PAINTING: IT'S A GLOBAL SPORT" remains on view through June 29. The Southold Historical Society has partnered with Grenning Gallery of Sag Harbor to present the exhibition. SUFFOLK COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

"MATERIAL, FORM AND PROCESS: THE FURNITURE OF DAVID N. EBNER" opens on June 28 and remains on view through Sept 28. An opening reception will be held on Friday, June 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibition features 20 furniture pieces made by Ebner plus his drawings designs. Ebner is an artist and craftsman who works in four modes: classical impressions of furniture, turned objects, sculptural furniture and furniture.

"DENNIS PULESTON: EXPLORER, NATURALIST AND ARTIST" opens on June 28 and remains on view through Sept 28. An opening reception will be held on June 28 from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibition presents 250 of Puleston’s bird paintings plus his journals, awards and photographs. Puleston is one of the founders of the Environmental Defense Fund.

HECKSCHER MUSEUM OF ART – HUNTINGTON, NY

“HAL B. FULLERTON’S LONG ISLAND”  remains on view through August 4. The exhibit features picturesque photographs of Long Island.

“CAR CULTURE: ART AND THE AUTOMOBILE” remains on view through August 11.

ISLIP ART MUSEUM – EAST ISLIP, NY

“IDLE HOUR: William K. Vanderbilt’s Estate Oakdale, NY” remains on view through June 16. The exhibit of historic photographs is on view at the Brookwood Hall Historical Exhibition Room.

"NYFA 'MARK' Artists" opens June 16 and remains on view through Sept 1. The exhibit will feature the work of former NYFA 'MARK' Artists. An Opening Reception will take place on Sunday, July 21, from 1 to 4 p.m. For details and a full list of exhibiting artists, visit the museum's website.

LONG ISLAND MUSEUM – STONY BROOK, NY 

"CONEY ISLAND AND JONES BEACH: EMPIRES BY THE SEA" opens on June 14 and continues through Dec 29. The exhibition explores these two Long Island landmarks through an array of object, rare photographs, paintings, prints and archival film clips.

"COUNTRY SCENES FOR CITY PATRONS: WORKS BY WILLIAM SIDNEY MOUNT" remains on view through Sept 2. William Sidney Mount was a prominent painter of rural scenes in the 1800's.

NASSAU COUNTY

HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY MUSEUM – HEMPSTEAD, NY

“WE HOLD THESE TRUTHS” remains on view through July 26.  The show celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. Sculpture, paintings, mixed media works, works on paper, and resource materials from the period are featured in the exhibition.

NASSAU COUNTY MUSEUM OF ART – ROSLYN HARBOR, NY

“AB-EX / REC-CON: ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM RECONSIDERED” remains on view through June 16. The exhibit includes work by Abstract Expressionist artists who were influential during the late 1940’s and 50’s in America. Included are Richard Diebenkorn, Helen Frankenthaler, Hans Hofmann, Robert Motherwell, Jimmy Ernst, Fritz Bultman and Jon Schueler.

In addition, there are three installations focused on contemporary abstract expressionism artists. Presenting works are Judith Godwin (New York City), Stan Brodsky (Long Island) and Rita Rogers (Rhode Island).

"ALEX KATZ: SELECTIONS FROM THE WHITNEY MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART" opens June 29 and remains on view through Oct 13. The exhibition includes portraits of the artist's family and friends as well as early landscapes and collages from the Whitney Museum of American Art.

"AftermodernisM 2013 A.M."opens June 29 and remains on view through Oct 13. The exhibition presents works by five contemporary artists in focused installations. Exhibiting are Nina Chanel Abney, Justin Craun, Wendell Gladstone, Erik Parks and Tom Sanford.
