NEW YORK CITY, NY-

March is a busy month for art in NYC! Armory Week runs from March 6 to 10 touching off a crazy week of art fair viewing (and buying). Even without the art fairs, the city is not bereft of art and Hamptons artists and organizations a part of it.

New shows are listed first according to opening dates. Exhibitions closing soon are presented next. Current shows continuing beyond February follow afterwards. This column is updated as new information is received and is updated throughout the month.

OPENINGS:

MAR 2 (Saturday) 

“PHOTO 13” opens at Kenise Barnes Fine Art on March 2 with a reception from 6:30 - 8 p.m. The exhibition continues through April 6. The show features the work of three photographers, Bastienne Schmidt, Roger Ricco, and Jill Greenberg. Schmidt lives in Bridgehampton. MAR 4 (Monday)

The 28th Annual Guild Hall Academy of the Arts Lifetime Achievement Awards will take place on March 4 from 6 to 10 p.m. at The Plaza Hotel.

Awards will be presented to Mickey Straus f0r Leadership & Philanthropic Endeavors, Walter Isaacson for the Literary Arts, John Alexander for the Visual Arts and Nathan Lane for the Performing Arts. Alec Baldwin will present the award to Mickey Straus, Ken Auletta to Walter Isaacson, Lorne Michaels to John Alexander, and Jack O’Brien to Nathan Lane. Marshall Brickman will serve as Master of Ceremonies for the evening.

East End Connections to New York City Art Fairs 2013 

Armory Art Fair Week takes place from March 6 to 10. Here are a few artists with East End connections exhibiting at the fairs:

MARCH 7 (THURSDAY)

"BODY POLITIC" opens at the National Arts Club on March 7 with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibition continues through March 17. Curated by Courtney Jordan and Kristin Kunc of Gowanus Ballroom in Brooklyn. The show includes over 20 artists from the New York area, including Jeff Muhs of Southampton. MAR 14 (Thursday) 

“ALL ABOUT WATER” opens at Denise Bibro Fine Art on March 14 with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibition continues through March 30. Exhibiting works are Sydney Drum, Roslyn Meyer, Robert Steinem, Betsy Stewart and Janet Culbertson. Culbertson lives on Shelter Island, NY. "CHRISTIAN HAUB NEW FLOATS" opens at Kathryn Markel Fine Arts in Chelsea on March 14 with an artist reception from 6 to 8 p.m. The solo exhibition remains on view through April 13. The show features new paintings and sculpture by Haub. “LADIES & GENTS” opens at Salomon Contemporary in Chelsea on March 14 with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibition continues through April 27. Exhibiting artists include Amy Cutler, E.V. Day, Hilary Harkness, Jocelyn Hobbie, Judith Hudson, Deborah Kass, Laurel Nakadate, Kiki Smith, Michael Halsband, Nir Hod, Scott Hunt, Kurt Kauper, Dennis Oppenheim, John Sonsini, Billy Sullivan, and Dustin Yellin. MARCH 29

"Crossings: Larry Rivers & His Milieu - A Symposium" and exhibition opening takes place on March 29 at New York University's Fales Library & Special Collections. The symposium, made up of four panel discussions, takes place from 9 a.m. through 5:30 p.m. An Opening Reception for "Crossing: Larry Rivers & His Milieu" takes place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Tracey / Barry Gallery. The show is curated by Nicholas Martin.

The event celebrates the acquisition, processing and opening of the Larry Rivers Papers for Study and Research at New York University's Fales Library & Special Collections. The Symposium takes place at The Fales Library & Special Collections, Elmer Holmes Bobst Library, 70 Washington Square South, Third Floor New York, NY 10012. www.nyu.edu/library

Larry Rivers (1923-2002) lived and worked, part time, in Southampton, NY. The Larry Rivers Foundation is based in the Hamptons.

CLOSING: MARCH 16

“RAFAEL FERRER – CALOR” at Adam Baumgold Gallery on the Upper East Side closes on March 16. The show presents work from the last four decades including painting, drawings, works on paper and sculpture. Ferrer lives in Greenport, NY. “THIRTEEN CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS” at Spanierman Modern in Midtown closes on March 16. Exhibiting artists that are Hamptons-based (at least part-time) include Elaine Grove, Carol Hunt, Ty Stroudsburg, Susan Vecsey and Frank Wimberley. The show also includes works by Frank Bowling, Demetrio Alfonso, Jasmina Danowski, Teo González, Lisa Nankivil, Katherine Parker, Immi Storrs and Joyce Weinstein. “ALMOST PRICELESS” at Yes! Gallery in Brooklyn closes on March 31. The group show includes Colin Goldberg, E.K.
