Cold temperatures have arrived, making winter “official” in the Hamptons. The cold snap doesn’t mean the winter doldrums need to set in. Here’s where to find new art exhibitions and art events to keep life interesting:

AMAGANSETT 

NEOTERIC FINE ART - “The Neoteric Symposium” and San Joaquin's “Zeroisms” Record Release Show takes place tonight (Friday). The Symposium will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. The record release party is held from 9 to 11 p.m. The Neoteric Symposium will consist of presentations by local artists, curators, brewers, ecologists, and local individuals. Both events benefit Hurricane Sandy relief charities. The suggested donation is $10. The gallery is located at 208 Main Street, Amagansett, NY 11930. www.neotericfineart.com

BRIDGEHAMPTON

DAN FLAVIN ART INSTITUTE - “John Chamberlain: It Ain’t Cheap” opened on Jan 12 and continues through Oct 20. The exhibition presents six  metal paintings and the sculpture “It Ain’t Cheap.” Also on view are Dan Flavin’s fluorescent light artworks as the permanent exhibition. The museum is open weekends. Admission is free. The Dan Flavin Art Institute is located on Corwith Avenue, Bridgehampton, NY 11932. www.diaart.org

EAST HAMPTON

VERED - GALLERY OF CONTEMPORARY AND MODERN ART - "Preview 2013" opens today (Friday) and remains on view through March 11. The Vered Contermporary group show includes works by Hunt Slonem, Adam Handler, Jessica Lichtenstein, Ray Caesar, Ron Agam, Steven Klein and Peter Buchman.

The Modern art opening at Vered includes works by Willem de Kooning, Reginald Marsh, Fairfield Porter, Perle Fine, Wolf Kahn, Alma Thomas, Norman Bluhm, Esteban Vicenti, Pablo Picasso and  Milton Avery; photographs by Weegee, Bert Stern and Man Ray. RIVERHEAD - THE LYCEUM GALLERY AT SUFFOLK COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE - “Selection of works by the Eastern Campus Faculty and Staff” has an opening reception on Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. The Lyceum Gallery is located in the Montaukett Learning Resource Center on the Eastern Campus of SCCCC, 121 Speonk-Riverhead Road, Riverhead, NY 11901. 631-548-2536.

Exhibiting are JoAnne Dumas (Wading River), Ray Ellis (Stony Brook), John Stefanik (Sag Harbor), Cheryl Dorskind (Westhampton), Kathy Odell-Hamilton (Hampton Bays), Jannette Fischer (Center Moriches), Margery Gosnell-Qua (Remsenburg), Dawn Lee Diperi (Center Moriches), Linda Prentiss (Ronkonkoma) Al Feit (Riverhead), Beth Giles (Sag Harbor), and Christopher Vivas (Holbrook).

The gallery is open Mondays through Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.; on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Winterfest Kickoff Event  - Concert and event as warm up for Long Island Winterfest - Jazz on the Vine. The Winterfest Kickoff takes place tonight (Friday) from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hotel Indigo East End, 1830 West Main Street, Route 25, Riverhead, NY. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. Includes light fare and wine. Tickets can be purchased online until 2 p.m. today through www.eastendarts.org.

WATER MILL

PARRISH ART MUSEUM - Lecture – “The Institute for Wishful Thinking: Art, Activism, or just Wishful Thinking?” will take place on Saturday from 3 to 5 p.m. by artist and Institute for Wishful Thinking co-founder Maureen Connor. The presentation, which will describe artist projects that aim to have a social and / or political impact, is part of Hope Sandrow’s conceptual installation and project “Genius Loci” at the Parrish Art Museum. UPCOMING:

SUFFOLK COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY opens "Hidden and Forbidden: Art and Objects of Intolerance - Depictions of Blacks in America" on Friday, Feb 1, with an opening reception held from 6 to 8 p.m. The show is curated by Georgette Grier-Key Ed.D., David Byer-Tyre and Kathryn Curran. The exhibition remains on view through June 1. The Suffolk County Historical Society is located at 300 West Main Street, Riverhead, NY 11901. www.suffolkcountyhistoricalsociety.org
