HAMPTONS & LONG ISLAND, NY-

Art quietly persists at Long Island museums in January. Many exhibitions continue from last month with a few museums closed for January. New exhibitions can be found at two university museums in Nassau County. The Hillwood art Museum at C.W. Post and the Hofstra University Museum both open new group shows this month. Artist and curator talks are being held at the Parrish Art Museum, the Nassau County Museum of Art and the Heckscher Museum of Art.

If you're looking to visit Long Island museums, here's the rundown of exhibitions:

HAMPTONS

DAN FLAVIN ART INSTITUTE - "JOHN CHAMBERLAIN: IT AIN'T CHEAP" opens on Jan 12 and remains on view through Oct 30. The exhibition presents six rarely-exhibited metal paintings from 1965 and the 1965 sculpture "It Ain't Cheap." The works are from a series of 12-inch-square paintings that were presented at Leo Castelli Gallery in January 1965 in the solo exhibition "Paintings done in auto lacquer and metal flake on formica."

ON PERMANENT VIEW is an installation by Dan Flavin (1933-1996) of nine works in fluorescent light made between 1963 and 1981. The exhibition follows Flavin’s art practice from when he began to work solely with standard fluorescent fixtures and tubes to just before the presentation of his new art form was realized.

Dan Flavin Art Institute is located on Corwith Avenue, about 1/2 block from Main Street, Bridgehampton, NY 11932. The museum is open weekends from noon to 6 p.m. www.diaart.org.

GUILD HALL MUSEUM – EAST HAMPTON, NY

“JOHN BERG” is extended through Feb 24 in the Wasserstein Gallery. The exhibition presents album covers designed by John Berg, a former Art Director and Vice President of Columbia Records. Berg designed over 5,000 record covers for Columbia Records over 25 years. He was nominated for 29 Grammys and won four. Three Grammy Awards will be displayed.

"21st Annual Student Art Festival - Part I" is on view from Jan 19 to Feb 24. The show features works by students attending Kindergarten through the Eighth Grade from schools in Amagansett, East Hampton, Montauk, Wainscott, Southampton, Bridgehampton, Shelter Island, and Sagaponack An opening reception takes place on Jan. 26 from 2 to 4 p.m.

PARRISH ART MUSEUM – WATER MILL, NY

“MALCOLM MORLEY: PAINTING, PAPER, PROCESS” through Jan 13. Exhibition emphasizes paper as method in Morley's work. Artworks include watercolor, lithography, etching and monotype. Organized by Alicia G. Longwell, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman, Chief Curator, Art and Education.

"THE ARTIST'S VIEW: MALCOLM MORLEY" will be presented by Malcolm Morley on Friday, Jan 11 at 6 p.m. Advance reservations to the artist talk is advised as space is limited.

"Selected Recent Acquisitions: Building a Collection" remains on view through Jan 13.

“GENIUS LOCI: INAUGURAL PLATFORM PROJECT BY HOPE SANDROW” through Jan 31. "Genius Loci" is a series of installations located throughout the museum and its ground. Objects that represent beginnings were selected. The Platform Project is organized by Andrea Grover, curator of programs.

"SELECTIONS FROM THE PERMANENT COLLECTION" are on longtime view. Exhibitions include "Look and Look Again: Contemporary Observation," "American Views: Artists at Home and Abroad," "William Merritt Chase: A Life in Art," "Fairfield Porter: Modern American Master,"  "Esteban Vicente: Portrait of the Artist" and "Collective Conversations: Abstract Expressionism, Figuration, and Pop."

SOUTHAMPTON HISTORICAL MUSEUM & RESEARCH CENTER – SOUTHAMPTON, NY

Closed for winter housekeeping. The museum will reopen on Feb. 6. southamptonhistoricalmuseum.org.

POLLOCK-KRASNER HOUSE AND STUDY CENTER – SPRINGS, NY

EASTERN LONG ISLAND

SOUTHOLD HISTORICAL SOCIETY – SOUTHOLD, NY

SUFFOLK COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY – RIVERHEAD, NY

“COURIER & IVES: PRINTMAKERS TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE” through June 1. The exhibition features over 100 hand-colored lithographs from a private Long Island collection. Artworks depict activities, events and everyday life of 19th century Americans.

SUFFOLK COUNTY

HECKSCHER MUSEUM OF ART – HUNTINGTON, NY

“MIRRORED IMAGES: Realism in the 19th and 20th Centuries” remains on view through Mar 24. The exhibition features realist figure painting, portraiture, landscape, and still life painting from the mid-19th to the 20th century.

FRIDAY GALLERY TALK - "HOW REAL IS REAL? with BOBBI COLLER" takes place on Jan 11. Coller, an independent curator, will discuss several works from "Mirrored Images" and explore realism in the history of art. Registration recommended.

“MODERNIZING AMERICA: Artists of the Armory Show” remains on view through Apr 14, 2013 (Closed from Mar 17-30, 2013). The show features an array of American artists from the museum’s Permanent Collection who participated in the Armory Show of 1913.

ISLIP ART MUSEUM – EAST ISLIP, NY

“LA PLACITA” remains on view through Feb 17. The exhibit presents works by Caribbean artists in celebration of La Placita, a street festival in the Caribbean Islands. The show is co-curated by Beth Giacummo and Loretta Corbisiero.

LONG ISLAND MUSEUM – STONY BROOK, NY 

Closed for January for renovation of the Carriage Museum.

NASSAU COUNTY

HILLWOOD ART MUSEUM at C.W. Post campus of Long Island University - BROOKVILLE, NY

The museum is closed for installation through Jan 20.

"The French Connection: Nineteenth Century French Art from the Tabler Collection" and "Nineteenth Century American art from the Baker / Pisano Collection" opens on Jan 22 and continues through March 9.

HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY MUSEUM – HEMPSTEAD, NY

"The Lyon, the Which and the Warhol" - Celebrating 50 Years of the Hofstra University Museum" opens on Jan 14 at the David Filderman Gallery. It remains on view through May 19.

The exhibition presents photographs from its collection from photojournalist Danny Lyon and Pop artist Andy Warhol and connects them to works in other media by Chuck Close, Jim Dine, and Lisbeth Firmin. The exhibit emphasizes parallels between the artists in their use of indirect portraiture, physical presence and their creative process.

NASSAU COUNTY MUSEUM OF ART – ROSLYN HARBOR, NY

“ARTISTS IN AMERICA" - Highlights of the Collection from the New Britain Museum of American Art through Feb 24. The show includes 79 works representing American art from every era from the 1700s to today. Photography, collage, paintings, and other media are represented. All works were selected from the permanent collection of the New Britain Museum of American Art in Connecticut.

“Artists in America” Film Series through Feb 24. Films screen at 11 a.m., noon, 1 and 3 p.m. on Tuesdays through Sundays. A different film is shown each day of the week. Free with museum admission. No reservations needed.

"MEET ARTIST MARTIN KLINE" Lecture on Jan 12 at 3 p.m. The artist will discuss his transition from works on paper into three-dimensional work, including encaustic and metal. Admission is $15 non-members, $5 members (includes museum admission).

“EXCERPTS IN ENCAUSTIC” through Feb 24 in the museum's Contemporary Gallery. The solo show of encaustic works by Martin Kline also includes monographs from "Martin Kline: Romantic Nature" that were previously exhibited at the New Britain Museum of American Art.
