Art openings and benefits are on tap for this week's art happenings in the Hamptons, the North Fork and in Riverhead. Art-driven fundraisers include Bowls of Plenty in Water Mill and the Birdhouse Auction in Bridgehampton. Here's a list of where art is happening:
BRIDGEHAMPTON
SILAS MARDER GALLERY - “BAD JOKES” has an opening reception on Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m. The show examines many elements of humor and satire. The exhibition is curated by Tucker Marder, a recent graduate of Pratt Institute. Exhibiting artists include Honore Daumier, Francisco Goya and Pieter Bruegel, David Shrigley, Carsten Holler, Mike Kelly, Jesse Pasca, Yung Jake, and Daniel Heidkamp. The exhibition runs through Nov 18.
Saturday's opening includes the video installation “Suicide Stack” by Clare Fontaine, a collaborative duo from Paris. The installation will continue to be presented outdoors on Fridays through Dec. 14 from 4 to 6 p.m. (darkness permitting). PETER MARCELLE GALLERY - "Picturing Artists (1950s-1960s) - Photographs by Dan Budnik" opens tomorrow and remains on view through Oct 28. An artist reception will not be held. The exhibition features intimate portraits of well-known artists from the New York School. Portraits include Jasper Johns, Ellsworth Kelly, Mark Rothko, Alexander Calder, Willem de Kooning, John Chamberlain, Larry Bell, Claes Oldenburg and Robert Rauschenberg. PETER MARCELLE GALLERY - THE 8TH ANNUAL BIRDHOUSE AUCTION will be held on Saturday from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The fundraiser benefits the Coalition of Women’s Cancers at Southampton Hospital. Over 80 artists made art birdhouses for the event. Renee Zellweger serves as honorary chairwoman of the event. Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door. EAST HAMPTON/SPRINGS
ASHAWAGH HALL - “Paco and Friends” has an opening reception tonight (Friday) from 5 to 8 p.m. An Artist Talk, “Remember Paco,” takes place on Sunday at 1 p.m. Nine artists will show their work alongside their friend Francisco Sainz (1923-1998). Sainz was an artist and mask maker who spent the latter part of his life in East Hampton, Ny. The show runs through Oct 14. Exhibiting artists are Susan Bradfield, Jennifer Cross, Monica Enders, Lily Kot, Teri Kennedy, Christine Newman, Maria Pessino, Gabriele Raacke, and Athos Zacharias. GREENPORT
EAST END ARTS at BRECKNOCK HALL - “Maritime Art Show” has an opening reception on Thursday (Oct 18) from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Admission is free. The show is juried by arts advocate Vivian Sheehan and artist Alan Bull. ‘Best in Show’ has been awarded to Michael Withers for his color reduction print “Catch of the Day.” The show can be viewed on weekends from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Oct 28. SOUTH STREET GALLERY - “Plein Air Peconic VII” has a Coffee with the Artists reception on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Paintings and photographs featuring the North Fork are on view. Exhibiting artists are Casey Chalem Anderson, Susan D'Alessio, Aubrey Grainger, Anita Kusick, Michele Margit, Gordon Matheson, Joanne Rosko, Eileen Dawn Skretch, Tom Steele, Kathryn Szoka and Ellen Watson. RIVERHEAD
EAST END ARTS GALLERY- “Winner’s Show” has an opening reception tonight (Friday) from 5 to 7 p.m. The group exhibit features artists who won "Best in Show" in juried East End Gallery shows held in 2011. Exhibiting artists include Jeanette Dowdell, Barbara Groot, Jax Peters Lowell, Dianne Martin, Marion Jones, Jonathan Pearlman, and Robert Strimban. The exhibition runs through Nov 9. WATERMILL
CELADON GALLERY at THE WATER MILL MUSEUM - “Bowls of Plenty” fundraiser takes place on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The benefit features homemade soups served in handmade pottery soup bowls donated by the potters of the Clay Art Guild. Admission includes bread, drinks, dessert and a choice of bowl. The event benefits the Water Mill Museum. Admission is $20.
