Jane Martin is an award-winning American artist living in East Hampton with a passionate interest in the powerful forces of nature: in particular water, women, and natural vortexes. Her photographic and video work of water (shot in East Hampton and Australia as well as a recent trip to Iceland) explore its power and sensuality, seizing on moments that “whisper, roar or gush,” transfixing the viewer with intimate details not captured by the human eye. The ocean’s display of overwhelming force reminds us of the enormity of its power.
This year she was awarded Honorable Mention in Hamptons Art Hub's "Inspired by Water” Competition for the photograph WHISPER, ROAR, GUSH II.
Martin seeks to capture moments that express the sublime and majestic qualities of the ocean, its contours, spray and foam in all of its shifting moods. Her large prints envelop the viewer with a split-second of its force to allow the audience to experience something she feels is extraordinary.
Her work can also border on the abstract, an examination of what lies ‘below.’ In contrast to the drama of the ocean, in the Down Under series, she is drawn to uniquely calm waterways, peering down into their depths and mapping their surfaces. The resulting isolation of submerged forms and shadows or patterns leaves the viewer to question their origins. Here ambiguity is the key, for it allows the viewer a form of subliminal reflection or identification.
Martin’s photographs have been exhibited in numerous museums, art fairs and galleries in New York City, the Hamptons, Miami, Santa Fe, Dallas, Los Angeles and Europe – including solo exhibitions at Guild Hall Museum and Islip Art Museum. In the summer of 2016 her work was exhibited at the Market Art + Design Fair in Bridgehampton, NY and presently she has several resin-coated water pieces on display at “The Other Side of Summer” exhibit in Sag Harbor, NY. In addition, she was one of 54 artists selected for the Heckscher Museum Biennial in Huntington, NY and her work is on display there through December 4th, 2016.
Martin’s work is also in the permanent collection of the Parrish Art Museum, Guild Hall Museum, Islip Art Museum and corporate and private collections throughout the world.
Each photograph is a limited edition on Moab Metallic Pearl or Hahnemuehle paper, printed and signed by the artist. Photos from her recent trip to Iceland will be available in the near future on her website or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
