Art museums on Long Island present a varied group of exhibitions in January 2017 ranging from politics to social upheaval to student art shows to North Fork photography. New exhibitions opening this month in Long Island museums can be found at the Islip Art Museum, the Hofstra University Museum and the Suffolk County Historical Society.

Hofstra University Museum unveils a historic photography show of images made while documenting the sixties civil rights movement taken by Danny Lyons. Islip Art Museum opens a group show exploring interpretations of structures and a solo photography show by Long Island artist Scott Farrell. The Suffolk County Historical Society in Riverhead unveils a new show of contemporary photography featuring documentary and fine art photography depicting the North Fork by three photographers.

DAN FLAVIN ART INSTITUTE – BRIDGEHAMPTON, NY

“DAN FLAVIN: ICONS” continues through April 30, 2017. The five wall-mounted “icons” on view in the exhibition bridge the mediums of painting and sculpture. The box-like constructions with painted surfaces and attached light fixtures were created between 1961 and 1964.

ON PERMANENT VIEW is an installation by Dan Flavin (1933-1996) of nine works in fluorescent light made between 1963 and 1981. The exhibition follows Flavin’s art practice from when he began to work solely with standard fluorescent fixtures and tubes to just before the presentation of his new art form was realized.

GUILD HALL MUSEUM – EAST HAMPTON, NY

"STUDENT ARTS FESTIVAL: PART I, GRADES K-8" opens January 14, 2017 and continues through February 12, 2017. An Opening Reception takes place on Saturday, January 14 from 2 to 4 p.m. Now in its 25th year, the Student Arts Festival celebrates young local artists in schools from Bridgehampton to Montauk. Over 3,500 works will be on view. Part II of the exhibition, showcasing the work of high school students, opens February 25, 2017.

HECKSCHER MUSEUM OF ART – HUNTINGTON, NY

"MORT KUNSTLER: THE NEW NATION" continues through April 2, 2017. This exhibition features Mort Künstler's most recent paintings that depict the story of our country's birth from settlement through the Revolutionary War and the inauguration of George Washington.

"NORMAN ROCKWELL AND FRIENDS: AMERICAN ILLUSTRATIONS FROM THE MORT KUNSTLER COLLECTION" continues through March 5, 2017. The exhibition features works by masters from the Golden Age of American Illustration. Artists on view include Edwin Austin Abbey, Howard Chandler Christy, Dean Cornwell, Charles Dana Gibson, Winslow Homer, J.C. Leyendecker, Maxfield Parrish, Howard Pyle, Norman Rockwell, and N.C. Wyeth, among others.

HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY MUSEUM – HEMPSTEAD, NY

"POLITICAL SLANT II: EDITORIAL CARTOONS" continues through March 12, 2017. This exhibition features works by caricaturist and cartoonist Thomas Nast for historical context along with works by award-winning editorial cartoonists Matt Davies, Walt Handelsman, Mike Keefe, Steve Kelley, and Signe Wilkinson that offer commentary on our current national election process, candidates, and key issues.

"DANNY LYON: MEMORIES OF THE SOUTHERN CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT" opens January 31, 2017. The exhibition features photographs by Danny Lyon, taken from 1962 to 1964 while traveling across the country documenting the Civil Rights Movement.

ISLIP ART MUSEUM – EAST ISLIP, NY

"THE STRUCTURE OF THINGS" opens January 15, 2017 and continues through March 12, 2017. An after-hours event and Reception takes place on January 28 from 7 to 11 p.m. The show, curated by Beth Giacummo, presents interpretations of structures found in everyday lives resulting in new forms expressed through painting, drawing, installation and mixed media.

The exhibition will also feature interactive sound architecture that inspires the way we use music and creativity in our daily environments. Exhibiting artists are Darlene Charneco, Heejung Cho, Corydon Cowansage, Linda Ganjian, Linda Louis, Maria Sophia Macedonio, Clayton Orehek, Jack Licitra and Danny Tanzi.

"ELEMENTAL EXPOSURE: THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF SCOTT FARRELL" opens January 15, 2017 and continues through March 12, 2017. An after-hours event and Reception takes place on January 28 from 7 to 11 p.m. Scott Farrell’s photographic works are created by capturing organic materials and how the effects of nature’s elements such as water, wind, and extreme temperatures transform these materials.

LONGHOUSE RESERVE - EAST HAMPTON, NY

NASSAU COUNTY MUSEUM OF ART – ROSLYN HARBOR, NY

"SIGHT AND FEELING: PHOTOGRAPHS BY ANSEL ADAMS" continues through March 5, 2017. This exhibition of Ansel Adams' photographs from the KIA collection suggests how his intuitive and emotional response to the landscape resulted in powerful and enduring photographs.

"LIGHT WORKS: A CENTURY OF PHOTOGRAPHY" continues through March 5, 2017. This exhibition is a survey of photography processes and subjects from 1873 to 2000. Photographers on view include Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Curtis, Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange, Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, Walker Evans, Henri Cartier-Bresson and many others.

"LONG ISLAND COLLECTS: PHOTOGRAPHY" continues through March 5, 2017. The show seeks to focus on significant photographic works created from the 1960s through the present day. This survey of photographic works from private collectors reflects the cultural and social factors prominent to their era.

PARRISH ART MUSEUM – WATER MILL, NY

"ARTISTS CHOOSE ARTISTS" continues through January 16, 2017. Artists Choose Artists is the Museum’s juried exhibition open to artists working in all media and living on the East End of Long Island. Seven distinguished artists serve as jurors, each selecting two artists for the exhibition, which also includes the work of the jurors. This year's jurors include Tina Barney, Lynda Benglis, Donald Lipski, Tony Oursler, Jorge Pardo, Cindy Sherman and Leo Villareal.

"2017 STUDENT ART EXHIBITION" opens on January 28 and continues through February 26, 2017. The exhibition features art made by over 1,000 students attending schools on Eastern Long Island. Also on view is work created by students in Artist-in-Residence workshops at the Parrish with artists exhibiting in "Artists Choose Artists" including Suzanne Anker, Anne Bae, Monica Banks, Ben Butler and Saskia Friedrich.

"THE PERMANENT COLLECTION: MATERIALITY AND PROCESS" continues through October 30, 2017. The exhibition pulled from the museum's collection explores materials and the hand of the artist, bringing substance and gesture to the fore through a series of thematic mini-exhibitions.

SOUTHAMPTON HISTORICAL MUSEUM & RESEARCH CENTER – SOUTHAMPTON, NY

SUFFOLK COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY – RIVERHEAD, NY

"A TIME PORTAL TO THE NORTH FORK: PHOTOGRAPHS OF RIVERHEAD TO ORIENT POINT" has an Opening Reception Saturday, Janaury 28, 2017 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. The exhibition features documentary and fine art photography depicting the North Fork by local photographers Neil Scholl, Peter Dicke and Wendy Polhemus-Annibell in the Weathervane Gallery. "HISTORIC REFLECTIONS OF THE TEN TOWNS" continues through March 2017. In celebration of the 130th anniversary of the Society (1886 – 2016), the exhibition will illustrate Suffolk County’s ten towns in the decade of the society's founding.

“FULLERTON’S LONG ISLAND: THE LURE OF THE LAND” continues through March 2017. The exhibition features over 70 large-sized historic photographs from the museum’s Hal B. Fullerton Collection. Curated by Neil Scholl and Peter Dicke.

PERMANENT EXHIBITIONS: Six historical exhibitions culled from the SCHS collections. The Syliva Downs Staas Gallery presents paintings and furniture from the 18th – 20th centuries. Permanent exhibitions include “So Ends This Long Journey”, “Early Suffolk Farm Life and The Rise of Crafts”, “Early Suffolk Transport”, “From Near and Far: Ceramics in Suffolk County Households, 1750-1870” and “Arms & Armament”.
