It seemed like a Hamptons art opening, despite the fact Danese / Corey is located in the heart of Chelsea in New York City. The art gallery was filled with artists and art fans from The Hamptons, New York City and beyond on Thursday night, October 13, 2016, for the opening of "April Gornik: Recent Paintings and Drawings."
Attendees include actor, comedian and musician Steve Martin and his wife, the writer Anne Stringfield; artists Alexis Rockman, Arcmanoro Niles, Toni Ross, Bastienne Schmidt and Roisin Bateman; composer Bruce Wolosoff and his wife, the artist Margaret Garrett; fine art photographer Mary Ellen Bartley and many others.
April Gornik's solo show presents large and small-scale paintings plus charcoal drawings which present a personal view of the natural environment by Gornik. Despite what an initial glance may imply, Gornik's art is not literal representations of vistas seen but an interpretation of views remembered, synthesized and combined to create landscapes as unique as nature itself with an intimacy that is embracing.
April Gornik is based in The Hamptons and has work held by the collections of both The Parrish Art Museum and Guild Hall. A survey of her work was exhibited in 2009 at the Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington, Long Island. In 2004, the Neuberger Museum of Art, SUNY/Purchase, NY organized a traveling mid-career survey of her work.
In addition, Gornik received a Lifetime Achievement in the Arts award from Guild Hall Academy of the Arts and the Award of Excellence for Artistic Contributions to the Fight Against AIDS from amFAR. She is married to the artist Eric Fischl.
