The gallery list for Art Basel Miami Beach 2016 has been revealed with 269 leading international galleries selected to exhibit in the December art fair that is height of Miami Art Week (also known as Art Basel Miami Art Week). Drawing from 29 countries from North and South America, Europe, Asia and Africa, most of the galleries will be familiar to Art Basel Miami Beach attendees. Being accepted into Art Basel Miami Beach is sought-after fair and is competitive: 98% of last year's galleries reapplying to return, according to the art fair.
The majority of the galleries are based in North America and Europe with concentrations in New York City, London, Paris, Berlin and Los Angeles. New York City has the highest number of galleries per city with 76 galleries from New York City exhibiting in December. London weights in next with 29 galleries; Paris has 19 galleries exhibiting; Berlin has 18 galleries and Los Angeles has 14 galleries. It's worth noting the larger galleries can have multiple locations and each was counted as an individual gallery in the totals cited. Art Basel hosts three international fairs each year based in Basel, Switzerland, Hong Kong and Miami Beach, Florida. Art Basel Miami Beach will be held December 1 to 4, 2016 at the Miami Beach Convention Center, located in the same halls as last year. Construction is expected to take place during the fair as part of an ongoing renovation project but is not expected to impact the art fair, according to Art Basel.

Art Basel Miami Beach is entering its 15th year. Since inception, the fair has expanded to include focused Sectors devoted to film, outdoor sculpture, works in edition, and curated shows of historical significance in addition to the main Galleries Sector. Click here for a list of Sectors and a description of how they are presented. A sought after art fair, 98% of last year's exhibitors applied to be part of the 2016 edition, according to Art Basel. While the high gallery return rate is a good sign for collectors and exhibitors alike, the 2016 edition promises some surprises. There will be 21 galleries new to the Miami Beach edition with 12 accepted as first-time entrants to the Galleries Sector. The balance will present in one of the special Sectors.
First time participants from North and South America include Los Angeles-based galleries The Box, Marc Selwyn Fine Art and Various Small Fires from Los Angeles. From New York, first time exhibitors are Callicoon Fine Arts, Clearing, Di Donna, Thomas Erben Gallery, JTT and Off Vendome. From South America are House of Gaga and joségarcía,mx, both from Mexico City, and Simões de Assis Galeria de Arte from Brazil.
New participants from Europe include Christian Andersen, Galleria d’Arte Maggiore G.A.M., Galerie Greta Meert, Galerie Maria Bernheim, High Art and Vigo Gallery. First time exhibitors from Asia include Edouard Malingue Gallery, Leo Xu Projects and Nanzuka.
In addition, eight galleries exhibiting in special Sectors from last year's fair have been accepted into the main Galleries Sector. They include Altman Siegel, Bergamin & Gomide, Cherry and Martin, GALLERYSKE, Galerija Gregor Podnar, Labor, Menconi + Schoelkopf and Pilar Corrias. Rejoining the Galleries Sector is Galerie Nagel Draxler, who last exhibited with Art Basel Miami Beach five years ago.
The Galleries Sector for the 2016 edition features 193 major galleries from across the globe who will present painting, sculpture, drawing, installation, photography and video works. Galleries accepted to exhibit in December Miami Beach art fair are as follows:
