LOWER EAST SIDE:

Denny Gallery: “Brent Birnbaum: Voyeur Voyager Forager Forester”

Denny Gallery presents “Brent Birnbaum: Voyeur Voyager Forager Forester” on view from July 13 to August 26, 2016. An Opening Reception will be held on Wednesday, July 13 from 6 to 8 p.m.

"Voyeur Voyager Forager Forester" continues Brent Birnbaum’s practice of collecting domestic objects and repurposing them. In this case, the installation is comprised of over forty used, wood-paneled mini-refrigerators stacked and filling the main space of the gallery. Viewers will be able to open the fridge doors to reveal collections and miniature objects fabricated by the artist, encouraging a spirit of voyeurism and discovery. The fridges will be plugged in, adding an aural layer to the experience of the work. Birnbaum's work with everyday objects is informed by his interests in consumerism, design and notions of public and private space.

Denny Gallery is located at 261 Broome St, New York, NY 10002. www.dennygallery.com.

BROOKLYN:

FiveMyles: “And Still, She Grows Flowers In Her Flesh”

FiveMyles presents “And Still, She Grows Flowers In Her Flesh,” is on view from July 17 to August 7, 2016. An Opening Reception will be held on Sunday, July 17 from 4:30 to 7 p.m.

"And Still, She Grows Flowers In Her Flesh" features new work by Alexandria Smith and Katherine Toukhy. Both artists' works address notions of multiple and developing identities. The exhibition title is inspired by Nayyirah Waheed's poem, "A Genocide for Flowers."

Smith's outwardly light-hearted paintings convey an uneasy atmosphere through a repetitive and fragmented portrayal of childhood symbols such as ribbons, shoes, pigtails and dresses. Toukhy's dense, hand-drawn collages are composed of small and large-scale figures built with Islamic and camouflage patterns, suggesting layered histories.

FiveMyles is located at 558 St Johns Pl, Brooklyn, NY 11238. www.fivemyles.org.
