"Allure of the East End" Pnale Discussion

Since the 1880s artists have come to the East End to seek a particular seaside light and camaraderie with other artists. In the 1950s it was the shared artistic spirit that drew artists such as Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, Willem de Kooning, and Robert Rauschenberg to escape the city in favor of the summertime quietude, not to mention the cheap rent that the East End offered. Between studio visits and group exhibitions, these artists would commune on the beach, taking part in intense philosophical discussions. This is still true today (except for the cheap rents) as it was in history.

Panelists Helen Harrison, Director of the Pollock-Krasner House and Studio, Christina Strassfield, Guild Hall Museum Director and Chief Curator, and Dawn Watson, arts and design journalist and photographer, will discuss the rise and continuation of the artist community on the East End. The panel will be moderated by Pat Rogers, Publisher and Managing Editor of Hamptons Art Hub.

"What's so special about the East End?," Helen Harrison said. "For artists, the sense of community is key, not to mention the beautiful surroundings and the closeness to New York City."
