NEW WINDSOR, N.Y. – There's probably not a bad time to visit Storm King Art Center (with the exception of a day of heavy downpours). Located a short trip from New York City in Hudson Valley, I spent a leisurely afternoon enjoying nature and sited sculpture while strolling the grounds of Storm King in Spring 2014.
The exhibition "Evoking Tradition" by Chinese artist Zhang Huan was the impetus for my trip but the some 100 sculptures —many with unfettered views from a distance—are worth the visit alone. Walking the park, spying sculpture and then watching the work begin to tower while approaching was an unusual way for me to experience artwork.
Noticing the way the art was sited to create conversation with the landscape and neighboring artworks was another enjoyable part of the experience. So was happening across art by "old friends" connected to The Hamptons. The collection includes works by Alice Aycock, Dennis Oppenheim, Roy Lichenstein, Joel Perlman, all who have a Hamptons connection along with works by Grace Knowlton, Louise Nevelson and others who have sculpture exhibited on the grounds of LongHouse Reserve in East Hampton, N.Y.
