The Nassau County Museum of Art goes modern with two new exhibitions, "Selections from the Saltzman Family Collection" and "Long Island Collects Modern Art" presented under the single umbrella of "THE MODERNS: Chagall, Degas, Léger, Miró, Picasso and more..." The exhibition opens on July 25, 2015 and presents works held in private collections of Long Islanders, including the Saltzman Family Collection. The show remains on view through November 8, 2015.

Focusing on early 20th-century modern art, the exhibition includes works by Marc Chagall, Joan Miró, Constantin Brancusi, Edgar Degas, Robert Delaunay, Pablo Picasso, Fernand Léger and others.

"THE MODERNS: Long Island Collects Modern Art" section of the "THE MODERNS" exhibition was organized by guest curator Franklin Hill Perrell. The show was curated to present "...choice examples of 20th-century art from significant Long Island collections," according to the museum. Included are a wide sweep of pioneering artists of the modernist era including Matisse, Monet, Renoir, Dali, Léger, Chagall, Miró, Toulouse-Lautrec and others.

The exhibition is supported by lectures, gallery tours and film screenings.

Programming includes a lecture on September 26 by Jake Gorst, the author of a recent book on his grandfather, modernist architect Andrew Geller. On October 17, art historian Miriam Brumer discusses works in the Saltzman family collection. On November 7, Shirley Romaine discusses Serge Sabarsky, who mounted exhibitions of German and Austrian Expressionist works beginning in 1989 when he was the first director of the newly privatized Nassau County Museum of Art.

Screening daily is a 30-minute documentary "Edgar Degas of Dandies, Ballerinas and Women Ironing".

"THE MODERNS" also intends to honor the museum’s Founding President, the late Ambassador Arnold A. Saltzman, who during his life formed one of America’s great private collections of early modernist painting and sculpture, according to the museum. The museum is currently celebrating its 25th anniversary year.
