December provides a great time to head to a museum and commune with art. The East End museums (Guild Hall and the Parrish) both have strong new shows that are worth seeing. Contemporary and historic Chinese art occupies the main galleries at the Nassau County Museum of Art. In December, the Heckscher Museum unveils two new shows that push the boundaries of the photography and landscapes. DAN FLAVIN ART INSTITUTE – BRIDGEHAMPTON, NY
“A FRIENDSHIP: CARL ANDRE’S WORKS ON PAPER FROM THE LEWITT COLLECTION” continues through March 2, 2015. The exhibition is presented in two consecutive exhibitions. The first section, on view through Oct. 18, presents Andre’s correspondences with LeWitt and rare works on paper. The second section will be on view from Oct. 24, 2014 through March 2, 2015, and will focus on Andre’s poetry.
ON PERMANENT VIEW is an installation by Dan Flavin (1933-1996) of nine works in fluorescent light made between 1963 and 1981. The exhibition follows Flavin’s art practice from when he began to work solely with standard fluorescent fixtures and tubes to just before the presentation of his new art form was realized.

EAST HAMPTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY – EAST HAMPTON, NY
“IT’S A CHILD’S WORLD: EXHIBITION OF ANTIQUE DOLLS AND TOYS” continues through Dec. 28, 2014 at the Clinton Academy Museum. The exhibition examines the ways Christmas was celebrated in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

“NEW ADDITIONS TO THE GUILD HALL MUSEUM PERMANENT COLLECTION 2010-2014″ continues through Jan. 4, 2015. The exhibition focuses on artworks that have entered the collection from 2010-2014.
“MARY ELLEN BARTLEY: LEANING ABOVE THE PAGE” continues through Jan. 4, 2015. Mary Ellen Bartley, the winner of the 74th Annual Guild Hall Artist Members Exhibition (2012), is known for her photographs of books.

“MODERN ALCHEMY: EXPERIMENTS IN PHOTOGRAPHY” opens Dec. 6 and continues through Mar. 15, 2015. The exhibition features 20th and 21st century artists who have pushed the boundaries of photography though untraditional techniques and processes.

“FERDINAND RICHARDT’S NIAGARA: A STUDY IN LANDSCAPE PAINTING” opens Dec. 6 and continues through April 12, 2015. The exhibition examines Ferdinand Richardt’s Niagara in the context of landscape tradition. On view will be European and American works from the Museum’s Permanent Collection.

HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY MUSEUM – HEMPSTEAD, NY
“PAST TRADITIONS/NEW VOICES IN ASIAN ART” continues through Dec. 10 at the Emily Lowe Gallery.
Curated by Karen T. Albert, the Museum’s associate director of exhibitions and collections, the exhibition presents contemporary Asian artists who mix or juxtapose traditional Asian subject matter and techniques with modern Western Influences. Nations of influence include China, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea and Vietnam. Exhibiting artists include Xu Bing, Fx Harsono, Yun-Fei Ji, Bari Kumar, Dinh Q. Lê, Nyoman Masriadi, Shazia Sikander and Ai Weiwei.
“EXPLORING THE CENTURIES: 3rd – 20th CENTURY ASIAN ART” continues through Feb. 8, 2015.
Co-curated by Ms. Albert and Kristy Caratzola, the exhibition into three categories: Buddhism; Devotional Sculpture; and Flowers, Animals and the Seasons. Works include woodblock prints, hand-painted scrolls, metal works and sculpture that highlight esteemed and centuries-old artistic practices and traditions from the cultures of Japan, China, India, Tibet and Thailand.

“FAUX SHO’” continues through Dec. 28. The exhibition features contemporary artists exploring artistic methods and materials to produce illusionistic works. Curated by Beth Giacummo.
“EXPLORING THE FEMININE IN EGG TEMPERA: WORKS BY CHALTIN PAGAN” continues through Dec. 28 in the museum’s gift shop. Pagan will present egg tempera paintings of Barbie Dolls that explore ideas of the feminine and the body. Curated by Jay Schuck.

LONG ISLAND MUSEUM – STONY BROOK, NY
“LONG ISLAND AT WAR” continues through Dec. 28. The exhibition explores Long Island’s contributions to each military engagement since the American Revolution.
“LIMarts” HERE AND NOW” opens Dec. 5 and continues through Feb. 1, 2015. The exhibition includes 80 works from LIMarts members. A panel of artists from the museum’s collaborative arts group, LIMarts, will present a panel titled The Artist’’s Vision: Understanding the Creative Inspiration and Process. A Q&A session will follow.

NASSAU COUNTY MUSEUM OF ART – ROSLYN HARBOR, NY
“CHINA THEN AND NOW” continues through Mar. 8, 2015. The exhibition presents Chinese works from the classical, early modern, and contemporary periods. The show includes a large group of Ming and Qing Dynasty porcelains from the Frick Collection and ;large-scale classical stone sculpture from the Sackler Collection. This is the first exhibition devoted to Chinese art mounted by the museum. Presented in three galleries, the show also features ink paintings by contemporary Beijing artist Liu Dan (b. 1953).
The show is co-curated by guest curators Amy G. Poster, Curator Emerita of Asian Art at the Brooklyn Museum, and Kaijun Chen, Ph.D., post-doctoral Fellow at the Max-Planck-Institute for the History of Science.
“LONG ISLAND COLLECTS THE ARTS OF CHINA” continues through Mar. 8, 2015. The exhibition presents art in a variety of mediums from Long Island collectors. Many works have never been exhibited in public before.
“GAVIN RAIN” continues through Mar. 8, 2015 in the Contemporary Collectors Gallery. A native of Cape Town, South Africa, Gavin Rain works primarily in a neo-pointillist style and is influenced by Seurat, the Russian avant-garde art of the 1900s, and work by architects.
