December offers the chance for visitors to catch up and view exhibitions in Long Island museum before 2014 brings a new slate of exhibition openings. One exception is the Heckscher Art Museum: they open two new exhibitions in December. Also worth noting is an Artist Talk / Interview with Peter Max centered on his solo show at the Nassau County Museum of Art.

Following is the list of the exhibitions currently on view in Long Island’s museums.

HAMPTONS

DAN FLAVIN ART INSTITUTE – BRIDGEHAMPTON

“JOHN CHAMBERLAIN: IT AIN’T CHEAP” has been extended through April 27, 2014. The exhibition presents six of the artist’s rarely exhibited metal paintings from 1965 and the 1965 sculpture “It Ain’t Cheap.” The works are from a series of 12-inch-square paintings that were presented at Leo Castelli Gallery in January 1965 in the solo exhibition “Paintings done in auto lacquer and metal flake on formica.”

ON PERMANENT VIEW is an installation by Dan Flavin (1933-1996) of nine works in fluorescent light made between 1963 and 1981. The exhibition follows Flavin’s art practice from when he began to work solely with standard fluorescent fixtures and tubes to just before the presentation of his new art form was realized.

GUILD HALL MUSEUM – EAST HAMPTON, NY

“TRACING MORAN’S ROMANTICISM & SYMBOLISM” continues through Jan. 5, 2014.

The installation features the work of Thomas Moran from 1859 to 1917 with a focus on insight into the artist’s use of romanticism and symbolism throughout his long career as a landscape painter.  Many of Moran’s works were painted in a studio on East Hampton’s Main Street.

“SHORT STORIES AND OTHER EMBRODERIES” continues through Jan. 5, 2014.

The installation is an exhibition of work by Christa Maiwald, an East Hampton-based artist. The installation features portraitures of embroidered works on canvas, material and objects that explore contemporary political and art world figures.

“LANDSCAPE SELECTIONS FROM THE PERMANENT COLLECTION” continues through Jan. 5, 2014. The exhibition features 27 works of art by 20th century artists from Guild Hall Museum’s Permanent Collection. Each artist has chosen a different perspective on the landscape, ranging from rural to urban, abstract to literal representations..

PARRISH ART MUSEUM – WATER MILL, NY

“ARTISTS CHOOSE ARTISTS” continues through Jan. 19, 2014.  The juried biennial presents works by seven East End artist-juriors and 14 artists selected from a pool of applicants.

The show unfolded with the following exhibiting artists: Laurie Anderson selected Elizabeth Dow and Mary McCormick; Judith Hudson selected Don Christensen and Christine Sciulli; Mel Kendrick selected Elise Ansel and Eva Faye; David Salle selected Carol Hayes and Virva Hinnemo; Ned Smyth selected Koichiro Kurita and Rick Liss; Keith Sonnier selected Rossa Cole and Brian Gaman; and Robert Wilson selected Tucker Marder and Ezra Thompson.

PERMANENT COLLECTION GALLERIES:  Seven newly-installed permanent collection galleries were unveiled in November and continue on view through Oct. 26, 2014.

Exhibitions on view are “Look and Look Again: Contemporary Observation,” “Changing Views:  Expanding the Horizon”, “Portraits”, “Esteban Vicente:  In the Company of Friends”, “Poets and Painters”, “Dennis Oppenheim: Splash Buildings”, and “House and Studio:  The Spaces Between”.

SOUTHAMPTON HISTORICAL MUSEUM & RESEARCH CENTER – SOUTHAMPTON, NY

“DOWNTOWN ABBEY STYLE IN SOUTHAMPTON: 1900 to 1920” continues through Dec. 28 at the Rogers Mansion. The exhibition features the fashions, activities and lifestyle of the Southampton community between 1900 and 1920 that mirror the television historical drama “Downtown Abbey”.

“ANTIQUE SILVER BOOKMARKS FROM THE MYRA WEISER COLLECTION” continues through Dec. 28 at the Pelletreau Silver Shop. The exhibition features 60 bookmarks made by American and European silversmiths from 1800 to 1910.

EASTERN LONG ISLAND

SOUTHOLD HISTORICAL SOCIETY - SOUTHOLD, NY

“DECOYS BY THE DEMOTT FAMILY” continues through Dec. 15 at the Reichert Family Center’s Cosden Price Gallery. The exhibit features decoys made by the Demott family.

SUFFOLK COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY – RIVERHEAD, NY

“BACK TO THE FUTURE:  CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS CONSIDER THE PERMANENT COLLECTION” is extended through Dec. 21.

The installation features newly created paintings, sculptures and photographs near historical objects, and includes the works of Cara Barer, Rob Carter, Judith Condon, Elizabeth Duffy, Katherine Frey, Susan Hoeltzel, Keith Long, Judy Richardson, Donna Sharrett, Karen Shaw and Andy Warhol.

The show is curated by Mary Lou Cohalan, director of CarriageHouse Arts in East Islip and is co-presented by CarriageHouse Arts and the Suffolk County Historical Society.

SUFFOLK COUNTY

HECKSCHER MUSEUM OF ART – HUNTINGTON, NY

“OFF THE WALL:  Sculpture from the Permanent Collection” opens Dec. 7 and continues through March 16, 2014.

The collection features 3-dimensional representational pieces focused on the human figure plus drawings by sculptors and abstract works. Sculpture mediums include marble, bronze, plaster, wood, stainless steel, ceramic and stone.

“RABBLE-ROUSERS:  ART, DISSENT, AND SOCIALCOMMENTARY” opens Dec. 7 and continues through March 16, 2014.

The exhibit showcases prints, photographs and paintings from the museum’s permanent collection by artists who challenged traditional aesthetics, politics and social norms.

“PICTURE PERFECT: SELECTIONS FROM THE PERMANENT COLLECTION” continues through April 27, 2014. The exhibition presents art appealing to a wide range of aesthetic sensibilities. The exhibition is presented in conjunction with the Public Art Initiative Teen Poetry Project, Poetry for the HART, sponsored by the Town of Huntington.

ISLIP ART MUSEUM - EAST ISLIP, NY

“NEW YORK BOUND: INTERNATIONAL BOOK ART BIENNIAL" continues through Dec. 29. The exhibition features a selection of artist-made books from around the world selected through an open call by the museum. The show is curated by Dorothea Fleiss.

LONG ISLAND MUSEUM – STONY BROOK, NY

“CONEY ISLAND AND JONES BEACH: EMPIRES BY THE SEA” continues through Dec. 29. The exhibition explores these two Long Island landmarks through an array of object, rare photographs, paintings, prints and archival film clips.

“A PAINTER’S STUDIO IS EVERYWHERE: PAINTINGS BY WILLIAM SIDNEY MOUNT (1807 – 1868) continues through Dec. 29. The exhibition features paintings plus diaries and correspondence discussing opinions and observations on painting techniques, subjects for compositions, policies, music, morality, health and the weather.

NASSAU COUNTY

HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY MUSEUM – HEMPSTEAD, NY

“ARNOLD NEWMAN: LUMINARIES OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY IN ART, POLITICS AND CULTURE” continues through Dec. 13 at the Emily Lowe Gallery. The exhibition of photographic portraiture by Arnold Newman highlighting the innovative minds and personalities that gave rise to the ideas and concepts that shaped the 20th century

“LAND OF THE RISING SUN: ART OF JAPAN” continues through Feb. 2, 2014 at the David Filderman Gallery. The installation features woodblock prints, hand-painted scrolls and wood carvings with a focus on the rich artistic traditions from the historic eras of Japanese cultures spanning more than 400 years.

NASSAU COUNTY MUSEUM OF ART – ROSLYN HARBOR, NY

“PETER MAX” continues through Feb. 23, 2014. The installation features a solo exhibition of works by Pop artist Peter Max that juxtaposes portfolios of his most black-and-white drawings on paper against many of his larger and more color-saturated works in a variety of media. On Dec. 8, Peter Max will be interviewed by curator and art historian Charles A. Riley II, Ph.D.

“AFTERMODERNISM:  WORKS ON PAPER” continues through Feb. 23, 2014. The exhibition is an expansion of the summer exhibit “Aftermodernism 2013″ that focuses on the drawing skills and innovations of exhibiting artists. The show includes works by Charlie Roberts, Aya Uekawa, Justin Samson and more.
