WATER MILL, NY-

Over 1,500 people turned out last weekend to help celebrate the one-year anniversary of the Parrish Art Museum's new location and to welcome the reinstallation of the museum with new art throughout. The weekend saw the opening of the artist juried biennial "Artists Choose Artists" and opening of seven new exhibits in the permanent galleries.

The museum extended the hours of both Opening Receptions (one for museum members and the other by invitation) to accommodate the swell of guests converging at the Parrish. Held over Veterans Day Weekend, the museum pulled out the stops and included live music, projects for families, film screenings, exhibition tours, artists talks and more throughout the three-day weekend.

“We were thrilled and truly heartened by the overwhelming support from the community for this milestone in the Museum’s history,” said Parrish Director Terrie Sultan.

Nearly all of the 21 exhibiting artists in “Artists Choose Artists” were on hand over the weekend. Artists Jurors attending the opening included Laurie Anderson, Judith Hudson, Mel Kendrick, Ned Smyth and Keith Sonnier. Exhibiting artists in the biennial included Don Christensen, Tucker Marder, Rossa Cole, Carol Hayes, Eva Faye, Ezra Thompson, Mary McCormick and Elise Ansel.

Artists attending the openings as guests included Eric Fischl, April Gornik, Bryan Hunt, Mary Heilmann, Steve Miller, Roisin Bateman, Laurie Lambrecht, Darlene Charneco, Susan Vecsey, Eric Dever, Andrea Cote, Peter Ngo, Oliver Peterson and others.

Guests included Parrish Board Chair Fred Seegal and his wife Robin, Board President Peter Haveles and Elizabeth Haveles, Trustee Deborah Bancroft, and Elizabeth Balzer, daughter of the late artist Fairfield Porter. Also attending the Opening were musician G.E. Smith, Gabrielle and Louis Bacon, and Amy Oppenheim, wife of the late artist Dennis Oppenheim, whose work Splash Buildings, 2009 was installed in the Peter Jay Sharp Foundation Gallery.
