DISPATCH - MAY 30, 2013 (8:45 p.m.)
SAG HARBOR, NY-
It was a whale of a good time at the opening of "A Whale of a Show" exhibition at the Sag Harbor Whaling and Historical Museum last Friday (May 24). Too many whales, you say? We're just getting started!
The group exhibition celebrated the mighty seafaring mammal to help launch the museum's summer season. All of the artwork in the exhibition featured a whale with a portion of the sales benefiting the museum. Many artworks were made for especially for the show (as one artist put it: "There's not too many artists who have whales as typical subjects in their work").
"A Whale of a Show" brought the Sag Harbor and the Hamptons art community out in droves. People spilled out of the museum and onto the lawn to brave the rain and drizzle during the opening. The show was curated by artist Dan Rizzie and gallerist Peter Marcelle of the Peter Marcelle Gallery in Bridgehampton, NY.
Artists invited to participated included Derek Buckner, James Daga, Paul Davis, Eric Dever, Miriam Dougenis, Eric Fischl, April Gornik, Susan Lazarus Reimen, Jim McMullan, Jodi Panas, Dan Rizzie, Gavin Zeigler, Reynold Ruffins, David Slater, Donald Sultan, John Torreano, and Carol York. Many of the artists made works specifically for the show.
According to the museum, "A "Whale of a Show" celebrates the richness of our culture and good fortunes, from a lucrative Whaling Era to an economic re-birth in 1881 with the Fahys Watchcase Factory. Today, our unique Sag Harbor is home to seafarers, fishermen, artists, writers, actors, environmentalists, teachers and families all sharing a common love for the Water. We are surrounded by it, moved and inspired by it!"
