NEW YORK CITY-

Art is kicking in NYC and the Hamptons is a part of it. Here’s where to find a few Hamptons-related exhibitions and events in February in New York City. New shows are listed first according to opening dates. Exhibitions closing soon are presented next. Current shows continuing beyond February follow afterwards.

FEB 6 (Wednesday)

"Expert Language: Seventeenth Century Land Deeds in the Sylvester Manor Collection" will be presented by the Sylvester Manor Working Group for its Spring Lecture on Feb 6 at 12:30 p.m. at the Fales Library, Berol Room, 70 Washington Square S, New York, NY. FEB 7 (Thursday)

“JOSETTE URSO: SNOW DAY” opens at Kathryn Markel Fine Arts in Chelsea on Feb 7 with an artist reception from 6 to 8 p.m. The solo exhibition remains on view through March 9. Urso's paintings reflect movements of noted minute-changes and explore the contrasting relationships in the world around her. “FOR THE LOVE OF ART” has a reception on Feb 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Fox Gallery NYC. On view are paintings and graphites by Frank Boros and John Haubrich. The show continues through Feb 17. FEB 12 (Tuesday)

"VITAL TONES" opens on Feb 6 at Mayson Gallery on the Lower East Side. An artist reception is being held on Feb 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibition continues through March 5. Exhibiting artists are Brian Farrell, Joshua Mongeau, Minako Iwamura, Nikolina Kovalenko. Farrell is from Southampton, NY. FEB 13 (Wednesday)

“Lola Montes Schnabel | Within Reach” at Tripoli Gallery‘s temporary Pop Up gallery at 980 Madison was extended and now closes on Feb 16. A closing reception will be held on Feb 13 from 7 to 9 p.m. The show presents new oil and watercolor paintings by Lola Montes Schnabel. Tripoli Gallery is based in Southampton, NY. “Within Reach” will be the fourth solo show by Schnabel presented by the gallery. FEB 14 (Thursday)

"THIRTEEN CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS" opens on Feb 14 with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. at Spanierman Modern in Midtown. The exhibition continues through March 16. Exhibiting artists that are Hamptons-based (at least part time) include Elaine Grove, Carol Hunt, Ty Stroudsburg, Susan Vecsey and Frank Wimberley. The show also includes works by Frank Bowling, Demetrio Alfonso, Jasmina Danowski, Teo González, Lisa Nankivil, Katherine Parker, Immi Storrs and Joyce Weinstein. “RED LETTER WINTER BENEFIT” for LongHouse Reserve takes place on Feb 14 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Alexey Brodovitch Gallery in the Hearst Building. The event includes a retrospective of Diana Vreeland’s Harper’s Bazaar Years (1936 to 1962) presented especially for the benefit. A tour of an art collection held by the Hearst family and housed in the building is part of the evening.

Cocktails and canapés will be served from 6 to 7 p.m. A short film focusing on the architecture of the Hearst building is followed with a discussion by architectural critic Paul Goldberger (The New Yorker, Vanity Fair). "RAFAEL FERRER - CALOR" holds its rescheduled opening on Feb 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Adam Baumgold Gallery on the Upper East Side. The exhibition continues through March 16. The show presents work from the last four decades including painting, drawings, works on paper and sculpture. Ferrer lives in Greenport, NY. "ALMOST PRICELESS" opens on Feb 16 with a reception from 7 to 10 p.m. at Yes! Gallery in Brooklyn. The exhibition continues through March 31. The group show includes Colin Goldberg, E.K. Buckley, Charles Comer, Costain, Stacy Cushman, Marek Danielewsi, Nicole Handel, Charles Hecht, Soo Im Lee, Optimo NYC, Charlie Richard and Scott Weingarten. "Doug Argue: The Art of  Translation" opens on Feb 21 with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. at Edelman Arts on the Upper East Side. The exhibition continues through March 30. The solo show features paintings that make use of a conceptual subtext of language to create abstract paintings based on Herman Melville's "Moby Dick."Argue is based in New York City. He is a 1995 Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant recipient. “The Origin of Nymphs” – a solo show by Jeff Muhs at Lyons Wier Gallery in Chelsea closes on Feb 9. The show presents new paintings and concrete corseted sculpture. Syd Solomon – Abstract Paintings of the 1960s and 1970s” at Spanierman Modern in Midtown closes on Feb 9. The show presents gestural abstract paintings from 1965 to 1985. “Abstract Strength” at Spanierman Modern closes on Feb 9. The show includes abstract paintings by Mary Abbott, Charlotte Park (1918-2010), Gertrude Green (1904-1956), Perle Fine (1905-1988) and Judith Godwin. Mary Abbott divides her time between Southampton, NY and NYC. Charlotte Park‘s studio was in East Hampton. “Randall Rosenthal” at Bernarducci Meisel Gallery in Midtown closes on Feb 9. The exhibition features mixed media sculptures that were each made from a single block of wood. The show is part of the gallery's BMG First Look series. “KEITH SONNIER 68 to 70” at Mary Boone Gallery in Chelsea closes on Feb 23. The exhibition features Sonnier’s early works, including pieces from the “Ba-O-Ba” and “Neon Wrapping Incandescent Series.” Sonnier is based in NYC and has a home in Sagaponack, NY. “Film Noir” - New Works by Susan Grossman at Birnam Wood Galleries in Chelsea was extended to March 2. This is Grossman’s 11th solo show in New York City. “JOAN SEMMEL: A LUCID EYE” continues through June 9 at the Bronx Museum of the Arts. The exhibition presents a series of self-portraits that evoke the passage of time. The paintings reveal Semmel's artistic use of a camera and a mirror to make her portraits, according to the museum. Semmel is a resident of Springs (East Hampton). “The New Fauves” continues at Tria Gallery through March 30. The show features work by Franklin Hill Perrell, Sebastien Aurillon, David Collins and Chris Piazza.

Collins has exhibited in the Hamptons since the late 1990s. Perrell is the Executive Director for the Roslyn Landmark Society and was formerly the Chief Curator of the Nassau County Museum of Art. The 28th Annual Guild Hall Academy of the Arts Lifetime Achievement Awards will take place Monday, March 4, from 6 to 10 p.m. at The Plaza Hotel. Cocktails at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m.
Awards will be presented to Mickey Straus f0r Leadership & Philanthropic Endeavors, Walter Isaacson for the Literary Arts, John Alexander for the Visual Arts and Nathan Lane for the Performing Arts. Alec Baldwin will present the award to Mickey Straus, Ken Auletta to Walter Isaacson, Lorne Michaels to John Alexander, and Jack O’Brien to Nathan Lane. Marshall Brickman will serve as Master of Ceremonies for the evening.
