This week's Three To See exhibition selections include an extra something along with great art celebrated with a gallery opening.

"ESCAPE: VIDEO ART" - GUILD HALL
Toted by the museum as the first Long Island museum exhibition devoted to video art, the exhibition opens today with much fan fare. A Panel Discussion with the video artists and the two guest curators takes place from 2:30 to 4 p.m. An exhibition opening follows from 4 to 6 p.m.
"Escape: Video Art" includes many of the "pioneers of the medium," according to the museum. It also focuses on artists who were living or working on Long Island during the time they made seminal works.
Exhibiting artists include Laurie Anderson, Lynda Benglis, Burt Barr, Jonathan Horowitz, Joan Jonas, Tony Oursler and Constance DeJong, Keith Sonnier, Andy Warhol, William Wegman and others.
The exhibition was co-curated by Lauren Cornell and Hanne Mugaas. Cornell is the executive director of Rhizome and an adjunct curator at the New Museum. Mugaas is an independent curator.
The pair is presenting a selection of "influential artists who began working with video early in its development and traces a line up through 1990, bracketing an important period for this medium and a fertile time for artistic activity on Long Island," according to the introduction to the exhibition.

Selections present a range of video art forms, ranging from single-channel works on monitors to installations that immerse the viewer, according to the curators.

"PAST AND PRESENT" - SILAS MARDER GALLERY
Video art is also included in the group show "Past and Present" at Silas Marder Gallery. There's also plenty of fanfare coinciding with tonight's exhibition opening held from 5 to 9 p.m.
Presented in conjunction with the exhibition is the Eat Drink Local Film Festival. Activities include a Honey Bee demonstration (6 p.m.), local food vendors (7 p.m.), and screenings of short films (8:30 p.m.). The films were selected by Andrea Grover of the Parrish Art Museum. The event is presented in partnership with the Parrish Art Museum and Edible East End Magazine.
"Past and Present" offers art that has to do with durations and positions in time. The show includes paintings, sculptures and video that document aspects of the past and present. The work also provides a historic records and the art reflects different points of view.

"DONALD SULTAN" - THE DRAWING ROOM
The solo show by Donald Sultan includes a selection of important drawings and a new painting, according to the gallery. The show has an opening tonight from 5 to 7 p.m. The show presents a range of Sultan's work made from 1989 to 2012.
An avid gardener, Sultan is inspired by flowers and fruit to create abstract works that are infused with new life, according to the gallery. The works in the show "...reveals the artist’s inventive approach to his quotidian subjects which loom larger than life on paper and become transformative sculptural objects in tar and plaster," according to the gallery.

Sultan's 40-year exploration of material, methodology and the physicality of making art may be just as important as the natural elements that appear as subjects in his art, according to the gallery.
The exhibition presents art made using a variety of mediums. This includes tempera, gouche, conté, ink with graphite and one work that uses enamel, tar and spackle on tile over board ("Lantern Flowers, Sept 7, 2010"). Many of the works were made using charcoal on paper.
